No mic-in for anyone that cares...
That means no direct voice recording capability, right? That's my primary need in one of these (type of) products.
Also, does this model have some propreitary Sony lock on the number of copies one can transfer from a PC into a minidisc? I have an MZ-N707 whose manual states something to that effect.
If you have the N707, keep it. I have one as well, excellent unit, and it does have a mic in. There is very little benefit to upgrading to the newer units, IMO. Also, you can hack the firmware for the N707 to upgrade it to an N1. Gives you a couple different menu functions and capabilities that were not in the 707 as stock.
As far as making copies of music, it depends on how you do it. If you use the worthless Jukebox software that comes with it, it will limit the number you can "check out" to the MD. If you are putting CDs on the MD, just use the Simple Burner app that comes with it. It strictly allows you to burn from CDs, and works quite well.
If you have a lot of MP3s to burn, you have two good choices. The RealOne player has a plugin for NetMD devices, and will allow you to convert MP3s and burn to MD. It is slow though, and has some quirks and slight problems. The other option is to create a CD audio image using Nero, then mount the image to a virtual drive. That way Simple Burner can see it, convert and burn to MD.
Finally, if you have not done so, consider picking up a new remote. I have the MC33EL, which provides a backlit LCD, and full menu access. The MC11EL also works, the 33 is just the newest version. Check out the forums on minidisct.com for many tips and info on the N707. That was where I found out how to hack the firmware.
Minidisct - forums are under T-board
Audiocubes - Great source for remotes.
