The following fees may be assessed against your account and the following transaction limitations, if any, apply to your account.

Account closing fee (within 6 months of opening)* - $10.00
Account research (one hour minimum)* - $20 per hour
Cashiers Check - $5.00
Check printing* - (fee depends on style of check ordered**)
Debit card replacement* - $10.00
Garnishments/Levies - $40.00
Inactivity of checking account per month (after 6 months) - $5.00
Non-sufficient funds (NSF) item (each) - $30.00
Overdraft (each debit or check paid) - $30.00
Stop payments (each item)* - $20.00
Stop payment renewal* - $20.00
Wire transfer ? outgoing domestic* - $20.00
Wire transfer ? outgoing foreign* - $40.00

* These fees are subject to State of Iowa and Polk County sales tax when paid from a checking account. As of 7/1/00, this is an additional 6% of the amount shown.

** In order to ensure the quality of our check processing, we reserve the right to close any account that does not purchase their checks through Principal Bank should problems arise.

So it sounds like you're safe if you sign up, let everything sit for six months, and then close the account. Unless I'm interpreting everything incorrectly.

I think you're correct. If you're actually going to keep your Principal bank account and use it then that's another story because you may have check ordering fees, research fees, ATM use fees, and zillions of other fees.

If you're like 95% of the people reading this thread your intentions are to open an account with $100, get your free $50 and free $25 Amazon GC, make one bill pay (or whatever the requirement is), leave everything alone for 6 months, after 6 months has passed close your account.

Anyone disagree?

can't beat ING's $50 free for just depositing a BUCK (and taking it all out IF you're desperate or stupid!)

I gotta jump on THIS dealio...easier than dumping $1500-$2000 on that citibank dealio. that's WAAAAAAAY too much money to just make $150

thanks for stickin' this thing on AT PsYwhY

God Bless

I think I'm going to have to pass on this. I'll most likely I even have the $100 in the account - since there is no ATM or existing-account transfer, it's too much of a pain. If you close the account early, they will take your $50 back AND charge you a $10 closing fee. You must maintain a BALANCE of $100 throughout the 6 months to keep your $50. After the 6 months is up and there is no activity in your account, they will charge you $5 a month. Just some things you ought to be aware of. Nice deal for those who jump on it!

Don't dismiss the citi deal. If you have to keep $2,000 in account for a year anyway, a $150 bonus equals a 7.50% rate. And that's on top of the tiny intetest rate they pay you every month. It's impossible to find a rate that good on an insured deposit in today's market.

Thanks for letting us know, I didn't know about the $5/month no activity charge. I'll probably still jump on this deal if I can make small deposits by mail in check or through the ATM. Deposit like $5 a month. Yes it's a major pain in the ass, all the hoops you have to jump through but $50 is $50.

The ING deal is more to my liking. Deposit $1, get $50, withdraw. Muhahahhahaha

Actually, I'm going to USE my ING account, so it works out. I just need money now to fill it with

So this Principal deal is much better. Deposit $100 and get $75 back all within six months. that's a 150% rate (since it's in six months and not a full year)!!!!!!!!

Well, if you look at how much money RossMAN owes, you can't expect him to be good at math.

True dat.

Hey it's still relatively early, I've only had 1 latte so far and I'm stuck at work for another 5 LOOOOOOOONG hours

The last page you printed out when you signed up, needs to be signed and mailed to the address on the last page, with your check. They will then send you your packet with checks, ATM card and PIN #. All this will be sent within 1-2 weeks. You will get no e-mails from Principal.

I couldn't find the info on the $5/month non-active account fee requirement. Is that for the Online BillPay only or does it also apply to the checking account? Does it not apply for the first 6 months?

Principal Bank rocks like clean socks. I've been with them for 3 years or so. Billpay is great, I haven't written a check in months. Need to pay the water/cable/phone/rent bill? Principal will cut the check and put it in the mail for you, no fees. After setting up a payee, it only takes about 3 clicks to pay the bill each month.

Also they (Principal) will never charge you an ATM fee, though you will still have to pay a fee in those godforsaken states that charge you $2 every time you use the ATM.

If you live in Iowa or even the midwest, You shouldn't be using any bank other than principal.

I also hate how when you buy a orange juice container the pull off thingie is plastic and flimsy, it seems like it will break before you tear it off.

Don't you just hate that?

That's what I'm doing too.

With the free shipping over $49 at Amazon, if we use this $25 GC will we need to order $74 total ($74 - $25 = $49) to get the free shipping or don't they count the GC in the total?

You just need the $49 worth of product before taxes and promos.

I forgot to send in my deposit with the application. So I mailed in a check and now, two weeks later, they say they don't have it.
