Paths,

I'm not sure where you got one, but the following is a list of Cincy stores that DO NOT have any:

Beechmont
Reading Rd. (Downtown)
Glenway
Florence
Kenwood

If you got one in this city it was at:

TriCounty
Fields Ertel
Hamilton
Colerain

These are all entirely too far away for an Eastsider to drive.....anyhow, I have several WD 120 gb drives still in the box from a PM/Amex BVG deal for ~60.00...and USB 2.0 cases are at Compgeeks for $39.99 (I have a few of these Andara cases, cheap construction but they work!!!). So for a few bucks more...a person could make there own.

For eveyone asking about the various uses for these...I play games, watch mpgs and do anything I would off of an internal drive (except OS, boot) using an external one. Using USB 2.0!!!!

The Reading Road and Glenway stores claim to have sold the last that they had early on 11/4...I was there @ 10:30 a.m. Were you at one of these earlier? I discovered that the inventory only seems to update every 24 hours as I was told that they had them, when I arrived there were none. PM me if you know where any are....I am mobile at work and can go anywhere in the city (I have been off the last 2 days).

I agree, but that's what the box says.

It may have been mentioned, ... if so, I apologize for missing it.
Did you guys see this external 120 requires:

Win98SE
or ME
or XP
or 2000?

or MAC "True G3"
or MAC OS9

:frown: I want it for WIN 98 and some Win 95b :frown: I have USB 2.0 installed.

Before I get a pile of PMs, I'm still keeping it. I have ME in the laptop and I got XP Pro in the NFR rush ... Never did figure what to do with the doll tho.

Basically though, is this drive just a regular formated internal HD in a external case?
OR is it specially setup for external or a special external hd. Also, when i pop in a new drive, will it work with a 7200 pm wd drive?

Um, several people in this thread have already said "YES" you can do it. It's just a regular formatted internal HD in an external case. You probably already voided the warranty just by opening the case, much less taking the tape off.

About the warranty, I think the external case/hard drive is voided by removing the tape but I'm pretty sure the hard drive is still under warranty if you just call in the serial # to check with maxtor. I think I will do that tonight when I get home to see if it is a one or three year warranty that comes with this drive.

These 3000LE Maxtor externals have always had a one year warranty. We had one fail earlier this year and you are required to return the the entire drive and case with the warranty seal intact for warranty repair. I asked if we could simply remove the drive and RMA it and was told that even though these are retail kits, the drive inside the case is considered OEM by Maxtor and has no warranty unless still sealed in the Maxtor external case. I checked the S/N anyway and it did indeed show as OEM wit no Maxtor warranty.

Yes!!! this case will work with anyother drive, and this drive can work as an internal, is a regular drive the circuitry outside of the drive is what is making it USB2. Why is so many people asking this question? Isn't that damn obvious?
Man I can't beleive it.

A Staples number -- 1-800-333-3330 - option 3 confirns it is a once a day overnight update system.

The other issue it seems is, that if someone calls a staples to verify the drive, the employees may be buying them quicker than you could scoot on over to the store. Best bet if you really want one is to do the legwork yourself. You might lose an hour or two, but at least you gave it a try...

Any difference in the performance or changing the drives inside the enclosures depending on which style you get? http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/pr...00/personal_storage_3000le/style_diagrams.htm
This is just idle curiosity for me right now since I haven't been able to get one.

I did get 2 of the 40GB drives for $27.50 - one was Ultra ATA 100 (KIT: K014040GH) and the other 133 (KIT: K01H040) - noticed after I got them home. They were the last 2 in the store anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter.

That has been a problem historically and reported on FW. I did score a stick of memory before the employee spotted it, so I guess it works both ways. He saw it in the computer, but it was up front with my name on it. I got it.
We quit doing business at one Staples location for failure to do as promised on both holding and delivery of orders. We know of a few cases of what you suggest actually happening.

To be fair ... on this deal, it was textbook. I called, they held, I fetched. I have it installed.

Anyone want to trade my bare drive for another large type hard drive? I would like a Western Digital if possible.

I doubt they "fixed" the price as it was a clearance item. One of the Staples I called said "It is 299.99" Yeah right bud. Their computer shows two in stock, but "Sorry, we can't find them." Uh-huh...

I called my local staples, and they said that they don't even carry the 120gb version at the store... Guess I need to pay them a visit.

Unbelievable.
Called a dozen stores and on my last attempt I found an amazing Staples employee who searched her computer for two hours until she found one. I had to drive 45 mins to pay for it and the other store (a couple states away) will ship it direct to me. I think I owe this gal flowers or something!
