Don't give up all hope... I scored one in Cincy today. Was the last one in stock and I hunted around for a mis-placed one. There wasn't another one so I am considering myself lucky this time around that I got one.

Picked up two in Portland, ME. Schweet DEAL!!! All the 40GB USB2.0 drives were still labelled $179, which makes the clearance price for the 120's even more ridiculous.

And extra 240GB ought to last me another month or so

Just to tell you about my experience in Macon, GA at the staples store today. I checked with a store in the Atlanta area and they said that there were 2 units available in Macon. It was somewhat on my way, so I stopped in there. I asked the manager to check on the sku# and without checking he said, "oh that's the 120 gig hard drive for $97.50, we had 2 of them, but I got them both set aside for me right here" as he points to the drives and laughs. What an @sshole. Corporate will definitely hear about this piece of cr@p person. It would have been one thing to say, "no, we have none available" and leave it at that, but to act the way he did was uncalled for in the store. This from someone in his mid 40's too. Oh well. That will be my last visit to this store.

Missed out on this one. Called my nearest Staples first thing Monday morning, and the guy said they had one, but when he checked for it, it was gone. Perhaps he decided to put it aside for himself...

Oh well, maybe the next one...

Ok, so I stripped out the 120 gig from the enclosure, stuck it in my system. Took an old 60 gig and put it in the enclosure. Everything works great.

Thx RB!

how hard is it to take it out of the enclosure? Right now i have 3 drives. A 80gb Mator Liuid bearing drive 7200rpm. WD 40gb 7200 rpm and this 120gb. Would any of them work in the enclosure?

I hear ya, called the closest local store here in Seattle and the manager looked up the sku and said there were two at the Mill Creek store about 30 miles away. I stopped in, swiped my card and faxed a store transfer.. all is good and I went home.
Got a message on my phone later on from the manager who got the fax and said there was a miscommunication and they don't have the drive and not for a long time.. hmmm who knows..

PM muffstah - he said in this or another thread that you just need a flat head screwdriver and you can pop off the red holders on the side and it'll basically be common sense after that

I myself have not tried it yet (hell haven't even opened the box yet) but I don't see why it would not work.

I got the runaround today when calling to check stock at another store. My local Staples checked their AS400 and said the other store showed 2 in stock. So they call to verify(While I'm on hold on the phone) and they're like "Uh, I guess it was a computer mistake...they don't have any." I'll call that store directly tomorrow morning and ask if they have them in stock. Maybe the employee who tried to snatch them up didn't have the cash tonight and had to leave them there. If so, I'm goin for a drive

Yes you can use other drives in the enclosure. I'm using a WD 60 gig 5400 rpm drive in it. However, you need to jumper the drive to standalone or master.

Also be careful using a 7200 rpm drive, it might overheat since the enclosure doesn't breathe so well.

You only have yourself to thank. That was nice of you to give the employees the head up. You just taught yourself a lesson.

I want to make mine be a jukebox / movie storage . . . so my question is: Can I play mp3s, wav files, and stream mpeg/avi movie files from this drive using USB 1.1? Or will I have to get USB 2.0? Thanks . . .

IF anyone got an extra, or changed their mind about this drive and wants to dump it, PM me a price! I'd certainly like to pick one of these up, but unfortunately don't have a staples within 100 miles of me...... blech. -TAL

Not intending to be a smart Alec ... Pick up the phone and try a few out of the way places. Staples seems to avoid the big city and locate in the smaller surrounding cities ... At least that is the case in my area.
Three family members in separate households scored three...one each in stores ranging from 50 miles to 300 miles away. No ... not all stores had them. We just thought the deal was hot enough to make an effort.
Close to 100 posts in this thread and over 200 on another site in one thread on this item says lots of folks agree.

Find a Staples store by zipcode or city/state

Be friendly but stick to business. ... There may be a customer in the store waiting for your phone call to end.
Have Stock number from first posting
Printed coupon and be prepared to fax coupon to store.
Credit card in hand - Maybe Driver's License
Your credit card billing address if different from where you want it shipped
Shipping address - no PO BOXES as they ship UPS.

Now I went and picked mine up ... 100 miles round trip. The other two family members with faxed receipt copies in hand are looking for the "brown truck"

Good hunting.

It may have been mentioned, ... if so, I apologize for missing it.
Did you guys see this external 120 requires:

Win98SE Edited for typo
or ME
or XP
or 2000?

or MAC "True G3"
or MAC OS9

:frown: I want it for WIN 98 and some Win 95b :frown: I have USB 2.0 installed.

EDIT: Comes preformated as one drive with 111 gig available after partitioning. Included software for WIN98SE and MAC plus optional power saving software.

Before I get a pile of PMs, I'm still keeping it. I have ME in the laptop and I got XP Pro in the NFR rush ... Never did figure what to do with the doll tho.

If it works with 98SE it *should* work with 98. Cant see a big issue there.

try it and see.

There is no Win95SE. Theres a Win95 OSR1 & OSR2 (OSR2 supports USB) and a Win98 & Win98SE.

That's exactly how far I drove 40 miles each way & I came home with 5. I guess I wanted them more than you.

I still need a solid answer. I was able to open the case up and look at the drive
(god damn maxtor put tape on the drive to know if you removed it)
Basically though, is this drive just a regular formated internal HD in a external case?
OR is it specially setup for external or a special external hd. Also, when i pop in a new drive, will it work with a 7200 pm wd drive?
