how new does your computer have to be to have a SATA controller.. my computer is about 3 yrs old.. so i doubt i can use this w/out buying a controller. I do plan on upgrading soon tho, so i might pick this up anyway since its teh best price ive seen

By the way this is the 6B250S0 not the 7B250S0.
Copied from Drori at FW:
Maxtor have two models 7B250S0 and 6B250S0 - make sure you get the 7B250S0 which is designed to be a better performer.

I highly doubt you have SATA. It's a really small connection, about 3/4" wide and 1/8" tall.

I have to say this is a very nice deal, but I recently bought a Maxtor 250GB SATA, and I have to say their hard drives get EXTREMELY hot.... I can touch my old Maxtor's and Western Digital's fine which are luke warm (nice and toasty)... but when you put ur hand on top of the hard drive, even after it's off for about a minute, the top of the hard drive casing is scalding hot. You can almost burn your hand on it because of the extreme temperatures. System seemed to be working fine but I think Maxtor needs to watch out for their temps on these HD's, could very well overheat your tower...

That's funny, there 250GB 7200 RPM ATA133 drivers just get warm to the touch. I am running too of them in a mirror set with only one empty bay between them and it is just warm there.

I'm pretty sure that if you buy a drive around the time you're planning to upgrade you'll find a better deal.

And since heat is what plays a large part in killing HD's...

O and I have alot of friends that HATE maxtor. And that's for more than just a heat issue.

White-hot for that price, but now out of stock.

I think the difference between the 6B and the 7B series involves SATA-II on the latter and SATA2 on the former (or vice-versa). The 6B is the lesser attempt at a standard, while the 7B is truly the next generation of SATA. I'm too lazy to open up the PDFs on Maxtor's site to verify at this time.

The 6 version is branded Diamondmax 10, is SATA II and has a rated life of 5 years

The 7 version is branded Maxline III, is also SATA II but is for mission critical servers and has a MTBF of 1,000,000.

Both have a 3 year warranty.
