okay, here's ..er..cool news... the phone came in TODAY!; i got an email from amazon apologizing for the mistaken notice-of-delay... the phone actually came as originally estimated.

it was PREACTIVATED For me. the email they sent me had the phone # in it. I've only made a few calls so my prelim review isnt really conclusive....

PHONE:
-has a bit of background noise/hiss.... sounds like a cheap walkman
-build quality isn't top-notch. doesn't feel as solid as the run-of-the-mill Nokia or my sisters SCH8500--which is a very cool phone.
-but the Motorolla is just so SMALL and darn PRETTY! =D
-the flip-top moves side to side quite a bit unless its fully flipped out... feels kinda cheap

it also has a SWEET voice notes mode that no other phone has!

CELLULAR quality:
-I've only made a few calls so my prelim review isnt conclusive..
-One of my calls were out in the open, inside the digital coverage area, and it had loud popping/cracking noises... this is in a large metroplex (Dallas).... btw I've heard that they are in the process of adding a bunch of new towers here so I dunno
-Had troubles multiple times trying to get internet features from inside a library....

The AOL instant messaging is neat to show off...but its too difficult to type to be taken seriously.... The navigation in the AIM-mode is kinda sucky, too.
Also, everytime someone sends you an IM, the aol proxy server sends u a message alerting you about it, which cuts away the AIM-mode.. u'd have to exit the "message" mode (from the aol proxy email) and switch back to AIM... all in all its a pain in the ass

still..for 0$..i like it so far

Received my V60 from Amazon / VoiceStream (T-mobile) and I love it! It arrived preactivated within 5 days of ordering. CS was quick to answer and help me set up the phone number, etc. (Unlike my previous carrier - MCI who had wait times on hold in never less than 30 minutes) I've had it for a week now and find it to be a quality phone and quality service in So CA. Perfect sound - sounds like a land line to callers when I make my LD calls, no background noises or hisses, etc. Good plan too - 1000 anytime minutes and weekend calls free for $39.99/month. I haven't checked all the little features - AIM, etc., but I couldn't be happier with the phone and plan. If the the rebates go as scheduled, it's the best deal out there!. Just my 2 cents.

is Voicestream any good in CA?

My brother works at Unlimited Wireless (a Reseller for almost every cell phone service in CA), and he said they use Cingular Towers, but from what people are saying, they're way better. HTH!

hmmm..........NOT exactly. 1xRTT capable of 144Kb D/L that is ONLY if current CDMA upgrade to TRUE 3G. Ironically, SprintPCS and Verizon are converting its current 2G to merely 2.5G spec. In other word, they are just catching up w/ current GSM/GRPS Data Spec.

What spec planet are you living on, GPRS tops off around 64K and you are losing voice capacity to get that. At least 1X will give the data throughput up to 144 with normal throughput 64-96K, with double the voice. ATT has it right they are overlaying the PCS with GSM with only 10MB bandwidth, that will be for only data/voice users, there are no current plans to dismantle or add GSM to the Celluler ie 800Mhz band, the growth is very limited for them. And they will upgrade again down the road to UMTS. CDMA has them all beat the backwards compatibility from CDMA 1G/2G/3G is seemless and each upgrade offers more voice capacity. The 3G upgrade will blow away GPRS, and the EDGE that Cingular/Voicestream/ATT will go with is still Vaporware. You enjoy you GPRS, it still is a mostly metro not off the beaten path buildout, CDMA digital with Verizon has much more POP penetration then GSM. A good phone might be free or cheap, but does that matter if the system is not all that great of can handle the traffic, free phones and minutes only matter when you can use your phone, have your calls go through and work where you need

Just my 2 cents

ok so lemme get this straight... what exactly is 3G? What is the difference between CDMA, GSM, and all those other standards? What does it mean by my phone being 1XRTT compatibile. On my phone it says CDMA 3G , so what gives?

your phone is a CDMA 1XRTT is a 2.5G, compatible phone, GSM was a standard developed in 1985 as an open standard by the Euros, CDMA is a modified military technology developed by Qualcomm and went to market in 1992, the advantage of CDMA over GSM is capacity, longer battery life, can get rid of backround noice, the system can put your call onto multiple cell sites for better reception, and to transfer calls, on GSM and TDMA(ATT) your phone must change freqs evertime you change cellsites, this can cause a great deal of dropped calls you are hoping you are picked by the next cell site. Technically 1xRTT meets the standard of 3G, but realistically 3G should have data speeds above 1MB. With the econ slowdown you probably will not see 3G for the next few years you need more bandwidth for it. The advantage of your phone being 1X compatible is that the voice capacity is doubled and the data rates are faster 144 instead of the old 14.4-19 speeds, you useable speed should be 64k and higher.

my bro was telling me Nextel has the best service out there, except it's used primarily in businesses and stuff and the phones are expensive. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Nextel is not bad, it is a modified tech of ATT , they use TDMA the walkie talkie part of it is good for businesses. If you use your phone for mostly metro and around metro it is good, since the system is different than the rest you can not roam to other us carriers other than maybe Southern Linc, a small carrier in the Southeast. It operates in the 2-way radio freqs of 800-900Mhz, so coverage is more like ATT and Verizon. I used them and have a few friends that work for them, I like Verizon better more capacity and more spectrum, but I think they are better than ATT or Voicestream.

Just my 2 cents

I heard many generalizations about both voicestream and verizon so I decided to take them both for a test drive. In my house in Palo Alto where AT&T TDMA failed so did Kyocera 2235 with 1X CDMA from Verizon, but cheap nokia 3390 from TMobile picked up the signal and stayed at 2 bars indoors. So please test drive your cell service before you subscribe to them. Good thing that verizon refunds everything even the activation fee when you return the phone within 14 days

How does the V66 compare to the V60g?

The only thing I see wrong is the V66 takes 4 hrs to charge instead of 1.83 for V60g.

Dunno if you guys kno this.. The guy at the cellphone place told me n my friend this yesterday..

If you have free roaming (w/ your plan), and you're not getting signal or can only make SOS calls.. You can go into your "settings" and search for a diff provider.. you should see 2 of 'em.. T-mobile/VoiceStream and AT&T. You can den select AT&T. (and see if you have signal) This is for T-mobile in SoCal.. Dunno if it works elsewhere.

O yeah he said AT&T is updating the sites or something?? that's y T-mobile's service/signal might be bad for now.. (cuz they use the same sites) That's y he told us to try the above trick.. and a T-mobile rep might teach you the same thing if you call in to complain about the reception.

NauTiKa128,

I was getting crappy service lately in my area and T-mobile told me the exact same thing. I dumped them though and just got the V60g from Cingular at a great price.

Quick question. I've been looking in the newspaper (Sacramento Bee) and there are ads all over the place for T-Mobile (aka VS) saying 1000 anytime minutes, free roaming and long distance, and unlimited night time and weekend minutes=39.99. Is this local?

Does anyone know when nights begin for Voicestream? I currently have Cingular and an 8PM night, but reception bites out here in W. Sac. My phone only gets reception in two areas inside my house. I'm thinking of switching but I really don't want to lose my 8pm nights.

Unless you live in a state offering a special deal, you're not going to get any "night" minutes with Voicestream. They're current plans include anytime mins + unlimited weekends. No specification for night mins during the week.

My V60g battery only last 34 hrs at stand-by mode (no call in, no call out & no power off). I charged it 16 hrs when I received. I request a replacement from Amazon (very good service! I received it next morning). But it did samething (this time I charged it 25 hrs b4 I test it)! Am I the only one have this kind problem?

I don't know how good my standby time is. I've got three new batteries, and I've been too busy conditioning them as this site suggests. I wouldn't think conditioning is as important for Li-ion, but I dunno.
