I'm an original Core I5 w/ 5850. Wondering if this would be the best bang for the buck upgrade I can make.

1gb 5850? this should be a nice upgrade... and if you can do 2 it's a reasonable upgrade path...

Yes 1gb 5850.

I'm not sure that my mobo has 2 PCI 16x Express Slots to take advantage of CF.

I think one is 16 and the other is 8.

I'm also using a 5850, and I decided it's not worth going to 7850 because the performance increase is not worth the cost increase. Have you tried selling your 5850, how much do you think you'll get toward reducing the cost of the 7850?

The way I see it, it's better to wait until prices drops like this one start hitting the 7950 cards, and go with one of those instead.

I recall reading some article comparing various games with an overclocked 5850 and 6850 and 7850, and I just figured it's not a big enough jump in performance - the 7850 did better, but usually in the very same game the 5850 would be close enough to be acceptable/similar, especially if you overclock the 5850.

Are you thinking this 7850 will provide performance levels in a specific game you have?

I have this card, it runs cool, I could never get voltage unlocked via afterburner, but in GPU TweaK I got it to 1.225 @ 1050mhz/1330 mhz

Thinking about it to replace my 4870. Which I think is a sizeable step down from a 5850.

I usually shy away from rebate offers though. How is Newegg's rebate vendor nowadays.

It's 2x as fast as a 4870. Great upgrade.

Rebates go through the manufacturer's rebate administrator, not Newegg's. Just pay attention to the instructions and you'll be fine.

Folks, this is a great deal (in fact I'm picking one up), but it's a bad upgrade from a 5850. It's only about 30-40% faster. Newegg currently has a 7870 for $170AR and a 7950 for $220AR. Those would be much better upgrades from a 5850.

hell of a world when 'only 30 to 40% faster' sux...

i replaced a couple 5850's and a 1gb 5870 with 2gb 7850's w couple months back... made a nice improvement in feel of newer games and are a lot cooler and quieter... i probably got more for the old cards 3-4 months ago than you will get now, but i think it was a good swap... and the ones i got oc'd nicely while not getting much hotter and noisier... ymmv...

Just ordered it. Thanks for the heads up.

Comes with Crysis 3, which'll be fun. Doesn't look like any other bundles apply. Not sure how that usually works.

Think I'll have to give Tridef a try again.

I mostly play starcraft 2 and mmo's and I would like to upgrade my monitor/video card. I'm currently on a 23" monitor. I would like to go to around a 27" monitor.

I replaced my 4870 1GB with the Power Color 7850 2GB that was on sale for $135 shipped, no rebate a few weeks ago. No Crysis 3 included, but it's a nice upgrade from the old card. It runs much cooler and quieter, and power usage at the desktop has gone from ~150W to 65W.

both tubes are 1080p (i have to guess) so bigger doesn't matter here...

My general rule of thumb is to only upgrade when you can double the performance, although there are other factors such as how much you can get for selling off old hardware, and if other metric improve such as noise, or the ability to play at a specific resolution. For the most part, only upgrading when you can double the performance has worked well for me.

My 4870 was only 512mb, so it was time.

I saw some other 7850 2gb cards that could be had for $150. Ordinarily I would've done that just to avoid the rebate. But ideally the twin fan setup will be a little quieter and maybe OC a hair better, if I decide to push it someday. Luckily it can't be any louder than the ol' blast furnace I'm running now.

Anyway, I've always had good luck with MSI products. Hopefully that continues.

My MSI GTX 660 Twin Frozer is so quiet and cool. Would definitely buy another MSI TF card again in the future.
