Anybody know what the story is with these chips? Why are they so much cheaper than the regular pc133 regged dimms?

$38 vs $199?

It looks like they are high density chips as well, 32x4?

Wow- 4 posts on one thread. My bad.

I just called and they thought a severworks chipset was an Intel chipset. They didn't know if it would work or not, but that they do not work on Intel chipsets. I put in a request to Serverworks asking them if they support high density memory, we'll see what they say and I'll let you know.

Lewis, maybe you can tell us whether or not these will work on the Gateway 6400 series servers? They have the Serverworks III LE chipset. Thanks!

I am using IBM memory (true IBM memory, with an IBM part number
sticker on it), 256Mb ECC registered dimms, on my Compaq ML350
server, which is also based on the Serverworks chipset. Works
fine...The chips on those memory sticks look like the one
pictured on the Mushkin page...

I'd be jumping on this if my recent experience with Mushkin budget
memory wasn't so horrible (suckered me in with good quality
Infineon chip memory first time I bought "budget" Mushkin, then
shipped me total crap PQ memory the next time I bought [a
big bunch of] budget stuff)...

kwad, is the memory you are running now high density? That is what's holding me back right now-

Rowcroft:

I'm gonna sound like an idiot to say this, but I'm not sure
(and the memory is at home so I can't pull it out and look at it
right now).

If people are still interested tonight (that is, if someone
from Mushkin doesn't reply before then), I can pull a stick
out and give you a chip count...

rowcroft,
gateway is not to specific about what configuration of modules it will accept. here is a quote from their online database regarding DIMM compatiblilty
"Four DIMM sockets on the system board support PC133-compliant, registered, Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory (SDRAM) ECC DIMMs. Maximum memory is 2 GB."
since we don't actually own a 6400 it's difficult to say for sure. the "gateway approved" 256mb modules are not configured using 32x4 chips - that much we also can say for sure. the serverworks serverset III LE chipset does support the 32x4 density chips however. gateway's tend to be picky though so it's possible that they will not be compatible in that particular system. we do have a 2-week full reund return policy though so feel free to be our guinea pig! looks like RegisPhilbin already is.

In defense of Mushkin, I've never experienced anything but great service, quality products and absolutely accurate representation. If you order "generic" anything it's a gamble, if you order their high-quality parts expect high quality.

Actually, I would go so far as to argue that the "Muskin Basic"
memory I received was misrepresented. The first time I got
"Muskin Basic" it had good quality chips on it AND it had
a sticker on it claiming it was "Mushkin Basic". That is, they
put their name on the memory.

The second time I ordered Muskin Basic, I got crappy floor-sweepings
"I'll buy that for a dollar!" PQI memory sticks that are so
crappy that Mushkin didn't even put their own name/label on them.
This wasn't "Muskin Basic". This was "Mushkin Generic Floor
Sweepings". But it was sold as if it was the kind of stuff
Mushkin used to put their name on and sell as "Basic" memory.
The basic memory used to be quality stuff that wasn't likely
to overclock well. Now it's as bad as the absolutely cheapest
crappiest stuff on Pricewatch.

Mushkin knows this stuff is junk, and now they don't put their
name on it. But they still sell it...

And hence, my beef with Mushkin...

Okay... Question here (my knowledge of memory isn't that great). Will this memory work okay with my MSI K7T Pro2a Motherboard (Duron 700@850)? Or would I be better better off going with something else?

I think you would be better going with something else, this memory is geared towards servers and high end workstations. It is a little slower then standard memory (ECC is slower) but more reliable. It will also most likely not work in your system. You can get the Cas2 PC133 memory for a comparable price and get better performance. This memory is primarily for people who need ECC Registered DIMMS only.

gmccall,
that board does not support registered. the kt133 chipset does support 32x4 chips though so you should be able to use this one instead if you want to go with mushkin:
256mb PC133 Unbuffered w/IBM chips
please realize though that these aren't our best overclockers and they are CAS3-3-3.

Hey Lewis, if you are in sales and are commissioned, you could make some good money if you worked out some sort of deal for Anandtecher's to order through you- Just a suggestion!
