Took some elbow grease, but I scored a display model (no pun intended ). Supposedly, there are two available in the

SHELBY, NC

store, but i highly recommend calling before anyone goes. The OM where I bought it would not give any further discount for the display model, so it's $300+$24tax-$70MIR-1%cash back and my valuable time. Thank you for finding this hot deal!

edit:
OMG--This LCD is awesome! No dead pixels. I cranked up UT2004--beautiful! No ghosting. NEC's website confirmed response time of 16ms on average. My only gripe is the shiny coating, which reflects light surfaces. OTOH, the shine makes it look really sharp! Guess I'll have to turn down the lights in the office.

I have a question regarding the lcd monitor.

If you look at the picture of the monitor on the box, the hinge that connects to the base is pretty high up (45+ degrees).

Now when I was setting mine up, I have it around 30 degrees. When the monitor is tilted perpendicular to the surface, it is just barely over half an inch above the table. In the picture on the box, the monitor is a good 2 and a half+ inches above the table.

Is the hinge just that stubborn? I tried exerting a little more force than normal but it won't budge anymore higher. I don't want to break anything, but should I just apply a lot more force to get it to move? It feels like the hinge is gunna snap if I do.

Even the Manual's Quick Setup Guide didn't show a diagram like the picture. =/

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Do follow the quick setup guide. I had to apply a lot of gentle force on the last step to get the display to vertical.

The shelf tag said $400 something, but it rings up as $299. My receipt said $449 with a separate line showing a promo discount of $150.

Did you actually have someone check the price?

SpeedBrkr, I have this monitor and was also wondering about being able to have the screen raised a little higher. Mine only raises about half an inch or so above my desk just like you descirbed. I want to tilt it so its straight up and down rather than slanted back. I guess thats as high as it will go. Other than that I love this monitor. I got mine from CC about 2 weeks ago for 591 after tax (minus 50 dollar rebate.) I was tempted to see if my local OM had one and have a dual monitor setup but decided not to spend the money

This is what it reads on the rebate form:

"Offer not valid with any other rebates, offers or promotions unless specified by NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display America."

And on the receipt, you should find the following printed: "Promo Discount 655200118 ($150)".

Would you think this would void the rebate?

I don't think so because the rebate is from NEC, but the promo discount is OfficeMax. To be honest, this LCD is so nice that I'd be content even if the rebate bombs.

Don't bother if you live in the Houston area... there's not a single one of these anywhere.

I have a 1765, not a bad monitor but the viewing angles are limited - find for most things, but not multiple people watching the same screen. Good for gaming!

Don't bother with Austin, either.

Nothing anywhere near here. Some Office Max stores around here said they don't even stock NEC monitors.

Thanks for the post, thought!

Sure the stores don't stock this monitor any longer....... OM is changing the brands of LCDs and CRTs they are carrying. The LCDs are going to some offbrand cheapie and Xerox for their two brands carried now......the NEC and ProVideo brands they used to carry are the ones being blown out for $299 (all three are 17" and on sale......my local OM has all three models listed in their flyer for $299), so naturally they're not stocking them any longer.

What's on sale is any leftover in-store stock and when that's gone, the sale is effectively over at that store for that LCD, unless you can get a particularly nice store to locate one and bring it in to the local store for you.

About the NEC LCD........I've now got three 17" LCDs......a Dell 1702FP, a Samsung 173T, and this NEC 1765. The Dell and Samsung have DVI and the NEC doesn't. To be honest, it doesn't seem to make one hill of beans of difference. Got the Samsung and the NEC running off an ATI 9700 simultaneously for comparison, and the NEC's color is much deeper and more CRT-like. Absolutely no ghosting which neither the Dell (a rebadged Samsung) nor the Samsung can claim. Thought the glass cover over the NEC's front would be a big issue but when it's in place, I see reflectons only on the edges, not on the viewing part, and only faintly. Of course, I'm not shining light directly onto the monitor, but I do have a lamp above/left of the monitor and an overhead room light above/right and a window rear/right of the monitor. No problems with reflections.

Excellent LCD especially considering the $299 price..........the $70 rebate is icing on the cake. You cannot find such a quality LCD for this cheap anywhere. And as far as the rebate beign denied, my OM's manager stated that if NEC denied it, just bring in the denial and the store would make good on the rebate...something this store has done for me before.

OP, is there a reason for the fatwallet (FW) bounce in your original link?

$70 rebate without bounce

nah. no reason. I did not even notice the bounce thing when I posted it.
