Staples is sending UPS to pick up the 2 NICs since I can't use a rebate on those without the switch.

I talked to them also. Their process for UPS picking up stuff makes me feel alittle uneasy. He told me it would take up to 5 business days for UPS to pick it up. He said "just leave out with a note on it that says STAPLES". Why don't I just put a sign on it that says "free take one?"

My ISP told me that I need to get a router to be able to run two computers off of the cable modem that I have. Will this do the job and will it allow you to have both of the computers online at the same time.
Thanks for putting up with my newbie questions.....

A router will do this job. You can either buy a dedicated one or make one out of an old computer (I'm using an ungraded Packard Bell 486 machine for one now. Would have used a pretty cool PS/2 Model 55 I found in a dumpster but didn't have any MCA ethernet adapters laying around . . . ). If you go dedicated then just get one. If you want to use an old machine you just need like a 386+ with 6-12mb of RAM (varies on the software used. FreeSCO needs 6mb, LRP/Coyote need 12mb), and 2 network cards (one goes to the net connection, the other goes to a hub or switch to share).

I just got back from college and brought my computer home and hooked it up in my room. It has a ethernet card already installed
Heres my dillema, our house already has comcast high speed internet but the computer with the cable modem is downstairs. I need internet upstairs in my room, so i called comcast and he said i need a hub or switch of some sort along with some wire. Can someone help me out here. I dont want to pay an arm and a leg and was wondering if this deal would be good for me. Also please add info if you are good at this type of stuff.

I ordered the whole she-bang and got the same thing, Switch OOS.. The HDD came DOA :|, so when I went to return it, I looked where the networkign stuff is, and they had 5-6 of the switches in stock. I had the nics in hand getting ready to return them. The CSR rang it all up, gave me the $$$ off coupons, and I left.. SO.. if they cancelled your online order, check locally..

And one more thing, the Switch I got (silver-looking Netgear) doesn't have an Uplink port.. :|

I just came back from the Staples in Campbell, CA. They had aorund 5-6 of the switches and nics in stock.
So if you're in the Bay Area, swing by the Staples in Campbell (next to Fry's).

Ffactory, you can use a switch. Please remember, the downstairs PC (master) requires 2 NICs, one to communicate with the modem and the other to communicate with your PC. If you use a router, you only need one NIC in the master PC; however the cost of the router is higher. You will also need cat5 cables to connect everything together. Hope this helps.

Am I the only one that noticed that Best Buy has the ethernet cards from this deal on sale this week for $14.99 after instant rebate and before mailin rebate?

Time for a pricematch! $10 less on 2 cards...
