Same here. Staples is saving me into the poor house!

Putting a system together for younger daughter for Xmas and while I probably won't need the network stuff for it, the HD is too good to pass up. Of course, HD prices are trending down big time, so only time will tell if I was premature...

WTH - I paid $80 after MIR for a 40GB 5400 last fall and this nets out $10 cheaper!

EDIT TO CLARIFY: Thanks Shinji!
Copy Kenji's list, and then add a Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM Hard Drive $149.99 - 10 instant - $40 rebate (Item# 471535).

Use a $40off$200 coupon, and you're left with $179.86 in your cart.

Now you have a $40 rebate. You also have a $60 rebate.

$79.86 for an 80GB 7200RPM maxtor, a switch and two network cards. Sell it all and make yourself a nice profit! Or just keep it for cheap.

Can anyone of you help me? What exactly is the purpose of a SWITCH? I know switch is used for internet connection, but why not just use a hub or a router? Sadly I can't use hub because my ISP doesn't give out 2 ips so i had to use router.. but router has firewall and i hate it!

Actually, a switch doesn't have to be used for an internet connection at all. A switch is a better hub. Basically, in a hub, your data gets split off to every computer connected to the hub, slowing data transfers down. In a switch, the data goes just to the computer that it is for.

This is a very basic explanation, all you really need to know is that a hub-switch is much better than just a hub alone.

The firewall you are talking about is NAT (Network Address Translation), hiding your many internal IPs so they seem like one outside IP to your cable provider or DSL,etc. This prevents you from having to buy additional IPs. A switch would perform the same as a hub in this case and not help you out any.

hey, great deal. In response to the issue of the hub/switch vs. router thing...remember you can just run sygate or something similar to use a computer as a router....whenever that computer is online it can serve the access to the rest of the lan. Saved me a bunch of money on equipment. Also a sygate setup allows the host computer to have real internet connection so no problems with a firewall. You can even run an ftp on it i would assume. lata

Not sure how this is supposed to work, but I went to Staples today to get the set and out printed 2 rebates. One for 60(ad) and one for 20. Both of them ask for the original UPC so I was wondering what you all thought would happen if I put in a copy (with the cheap one just in case) and the original with the 60. I know 20 ain't bad for the set but paying nothing would make this exceptional... If you have any thoughts on this pm me what you have done, or just leave a reply incase this happened with someone else. The other formulated deal post mentioned this briefly so I'm not alone. TIA

actually, i think meril did have it up long before. he edited it for other things.

reglardless... has anyone checked their status lately? they called me to say they didn't have stock in a nearby warehouse and it was coming from somewhere else (ETA 6/10). But now.. on the order status page.. the switch is coming up as "Not Available."

Anyone else?

definitely see this post for some reported issues with this NIC. Of course, at this price, toss the NICs and keep the switch. Peace all.

My damn switch was cancelled. No backorders, nothing. However, I get to keep the $40 off coupon. I am going to call and see if I send the NIC cards back, can I still keep the $40 coupon, otherwise I'll just throw it all away. Then it'll be 80GB for $60, which would be sweet.

well, called to see what's up.. the CSR just kept saying to try back in 3 weeks... blah, that doesn't help me... no substitute was made. Returning the NIC's and applying a $20 coupon instead.

Yep.. outta stock, no replacement. And the 80GB drive I ordered and received was DOA.. :|

I used a 40 off 200, wonder if they'll take that back now that I have to cancel the Netgear stuff.. If they leave the $40.00 on, and I also get the $40.00 rebate.. Cool!

A friendly Staples csr called to say the NetGear Switch was not in stock and did not ship with my order (got the 80G Maxtor today).

Staples is trying to get more of these switches. She suggested that I call up in 3 or 4 days and try to get another one. They may not show up on the web site, you must call.

She brought up the combined rebate issue and told me that the NIC's could be returned, if need be, within 30 days.

We've got some time. I hope to get one of those switches. There is a two week rebate period (purchase 2002-06-02 to 2002-06-15, and mailed by 7-15).

Sorry I didn't mean it as a dig, I felt that it was a repost that's all.
But hey there have been many reposts that have done me good by making me do a double take.
It was posted quite a while ago, I was reading about it this past Saturday.
No harm meant there guys,
I got luv for you all!

Now I've got a question for those of us with the hardrive plus switch orders in.
Since they are OOS(I got my order today and nada on the switch but got the NIC's)
If we take back the NIC's do we still keep the coupon discount?
How do you return something when you buy it from staples online?

if you call Staples.com they will send UPS/Staples delivery to pickup and seems quite a few are being allowed to keep the $$ off as well as always YMMV
How do you return something when you buy it from staples online?
the local B&M will do returns but they have a tendency to pro-rate the coupon OM does that as well ...

Switch was OOS for me too and Staples is sending UPS to pick up the 2 NICs since I can't use a rebate on those without the switch.

Letting me keep the $40 coupon I used so with that and the $40 MIR on the HD, with 4.5% VA sales tax, it nets out to $64.43. Not bad for an 80GB 7200rpm HD!
