In the past month I have yanked roughly 50 drives out. I have not seen any of the secret "new" ones that cannot be used in cameras/PDAs. They may be out there, but I bought a model 3 days ago, arrvied today from Creative and the drive is now in my CanonS50. Works fine.

I just got the brand new one from creative that I bought last week. It, indeed, comes in different packaging, a square box instead of oval one. I checked the drive and its ATA only, does not work in devices that accept CF-II, only works in the ATA mode. -- just an FYI.

It makes little sense for Nomad to change the type of drive. The company wants to sell its MP3 player and it is much more salable with a removable drive than without. Why should Nomad care if the drive is removed as long as the product sells? In fact, if I were in charge of marketing I would modify the player so the microdrive could be removed and replaced very easily to make the microdrive dual use and therefore increase the perceived value of the player. Makes me wonder if they were required to change by the drive manufacturer so its other markets are protected.

As to if it can be used as an external USB drive, the description includes the statement "data files." Doesn't that suggest it can since how can data files be accessed if not as a drive? Maybe I am just dumb.
