It appears that OfficeMax B&M is clearing out the Linksys Network Everywhere NC100 for $9. Nice card, well worth the $9. It doesn't advertise Wake-On-Lan support, but the drivers have a "magic packet" feature enabled, so I'm not sure.

After receiving my SMC router I noticed that my connectivity was kind of slow and I attributed that to my old 10mbps 3com NIC. I didn't think it would matter considering my cable modem is only 1.5mbps, but it does. With the 100mbps card I'm topping out at pretty much what I would directly to the modem. With the 10mbps I was losing almost 1/4 of my bandwidth. Go figure.

office depot has these same cards for 9.99, they (OD) has had this "deal" for a wile now. DO NOT get this linksys nic for use with linux unless you are 31337 or want to spend all day setting it up! I got this card (didn't come with drivers, just dead links to them) and it took me 1/2 of a day and tons of recommendations from irc to return this nic and get another one (i choose d-link's nic, because i already had one in my linux server anyways).

anyways, this is a good windows card, but stay away from it if you are going to use an OS besides windows.

(oh yeah... on the od part. this linksys card will be under 14$ and 9.99$ price tags, just tell cashier that it is 9.99)

thanks-lee

Just went to my local OfficeMax, couldn't find the card on the shelves. But I did find the demo box for the Linksys Network in a box package that everyone else jumped on a while back. So figuring I got lucky, I went up to the register, and they told me they were out of stock. Got them to check all the other stores in the area, none had the kit in stock, but a few had the cards themselves in stock. So I got home, called each one, and none of them had it in stock. So much for real time inventory...

Oh well... wish I had gotten in on this deal...

By the way, on the way back home, I stopped by CompUSA and they had both products... but at the normal price, when the hell they going to drop them? Heard it was being discontinued...

Trend, I got the newest version of the card, "2.1" and the drivers are available at the website. There are Linux drivers in there for sure, so this could be a recent addition.

Trend> Same thing here. I've had this card for at least 9 months, and my card came with Linux drivers on the driver floppies in the box. However, I was never able to get it working. I ended up swapping out the card with a 3Com, which worked immediately.

As you said, if you're using them in Windows, they're great. If not, pass on them.

yeah, this linksys nic is linksys's (yes that is correctly spelled). they do not have the tulip.c driver or any other drivers for this card included on the disk and the file that they have in the linux dir on the disk just points to a non linksys website that doesn't have the driver ( you get an error for that page).

i hope that linksys does have the drivers on their website (maybe anyone that does get this card and wants to use linux with this nic can download one of the other driver packages for an older nic (older nics had the linux drivers included on the disk that came with it))

well............. and also, most linux distros will pick up nic cards at bootup/installation, but the linksys nic it doesn't (for MOST distros).

i hope i typed all this right,

goodnight

Ten bucks isn't really a hot deal. I've had big problems with older Linksys cards and Windows Me drivers as well. But then again WinMe sucks.

If you check out the prices at buy.com several brands (including Netgear and SMC) can be had for less than $12.

I used Linksys under Win9x, NT, and 2000 without any trouble but never Linux. Worked fine in those environments though I just sold my last one in favor of 3Com, which are terrific.

The Linux pci-scan and tulip drivers have to be compiled and recompiled for any kernel change. My LNE100TX with them and updates are on their site. Besides modules.conf, rc.modules need an entry:

echo "Installing Tulip"
pci-scan.o
tulip.o

Ah here we go. There always seems to be someone ready to piss all over a post saying how it's not a hot deal, yadda yadda yadda...

$9 for a name brand 10/100 NIC at retail is a hot deal. Sure you can get lots of crap for around the same price on the net, but this one is little cheaper and you can just walk in and get it.

There is nothing wrong with Linksys 10/100 NICs. I've been using them and it works great (even in Win2k). I paid $19.99 at Fry's (I should have been shot for shopping there) for this sucker, so this is great for something at a B&M store.

Wag> I'm not pissing on the deal at all. These are great cards and they work well, provided that you intend on using them with a Windows OS. For the price, they can't be beat.
However, if you intend on using them with Linux, an argument can be made for the "you get what you pay for" point-of-view.
