I just used the the stock paste on my 3800+ Newcastle. It ran hot so I changed to Cermaique, but I didn't notice any difference in temps.
I think the stock paste is plenty sufficent.
So IMO, if you want better cooling, best bet is to buy a better HSF than try and rely on a different paste to lower temps.

I ordered a 146 from Tankguys yesterday. With their excellent service I've gotten a confirmation and shipping email, so I'm hoping by Wednesday or Thursday at the latest I'll have it as well as a new PSU, Epox 9NPA3 Ultra, and a 7800GT. Since that was all I could afford till another week or two, I will be overclocking with only the stock heatsink. I'll report back with my results towards the end of this week.

WOW. What happened to all of those sweet opteron prices. They are all sky high now, I was really looking foward to buying one of these but since they have gone up so much (220-260), it is now out of my price range. There is one site that is still selling them for under 200 but they are out of stock. Does anyone know where I can get a 146 for under 200 shipped. I just ordered an evga 7800gt and a dfi sli mobo, it's gonna suck if I have to get a less than worthy processor to go with my mobo and vid card. Thx for all the help in advance.

The opty craze is over - especially with the 146, since I think I read on these boards that AMD stopped making them.

It's not just an increase in price. Some distributors are not even listing quantities on order or even past due. When qty 0 is listed, the pipe is drying up to the resellers.

Well I can get a 144 no problem, it's just that I really had my sites set on that 10x multiplier. I can get a 144 for about 178 shipped, so it's not a big deal. How much harder if at all should it be to hit 2.4ghz or 2.7ghz with the 144 vs the 146. I know that the performance difference is minimal but its a lot easier to hit 240 or 270 than it is to hit 300. So should I wait to see if they get any 146 in stock or go ahead and bite the bullet with a 144? Thx again for help and opinions. Oh and my 7800GT and DFI mobo shipped today so I kinda want it to get here fairly soon so I need to make a decision.

i originally ordered a 146 from excaliber and got lied to by them because they told me they were in stock but weren't. by the time i received the cancellation a lot of other places were out of 146s. i opted to get a 144 since i definately wanted to get one and the rumors were running high and prices were still good.

as you can see mine is @ 2.5GHz on stock V. 9x280tt and 3xht working very well. i could have gone higher and had it post at 2.7 and 2.8 just to see if it would with a little bit of extra V, but i wanted to stay stock V so the amd program can throttle down since in my bios i don't have a fixed V, just set to auto.

Ok, I don't really care anymore........if you guys can just find me some legit websites that carry the 146 opteron I'll buy it. I'm tired of looking and waiting. So if you guys can find some websites that are selling them I would appreciate it, thanks.
