You get a 10x multiplier with the 146, while you only get a 9x with the 144. For people that are trying to get the max overclock, that seems to be the general reason.

You can get even higher if you go to 148 (11x?).

That is correct. 148 is 11x.

FYI, now showing 8 in stock, but good news is that tankguys and other sites are expecting inventory later this week.

i wouldn't buy from them, they showed stock when i tried to purchase mine through them and then for the next 3 days it showed my order was "good to go" and they had stock, then my order was cancelled.

go with tankguys, not only do they offer excellent support on this board but you can usually also over steppings of what they have.

I got the exact same treatment from excaliberpc.com. Their website showed that the Opteron 146 was in stock when I ordered. Three days later, they cancelled my order without consulting me. I will never buy from them and would advise people to stay away from this merchant.

I got mine from EXCaliber with no prob. Ordered it on 12-22 & got it right after Christmas. I guess they are selling fast. I recall that their stock had a time like 1pm that it was updated every day so that could be where the problem is coming from. It's a CAB2E 0546FPAW. Haven't had a chance to install yet

probably has something to do with greed.

Yes you do get the 11x multiplier with the 148, but these Opterons seem to all max out about the same speed. The problem with the 144's is alot of people have maxxed out due to their MB HTT limitations vice the CPU due to the 9 x multiplier. With the 10x multiplier, you only need a 280 HTT (which most OC'ing boards can reach without issue) to get 2.8. If you get a 148 with the 11 multiplier, you most likely won't be able to OC it any higher than a 146.

This is the reason that the 146 is the most popular Opteron, and the hardest to find.

I preordered a 146 from Tankguys for $169, and it shipped tonight.
Check the site in the morning to see if there are any 146's left, as I'm sure any remaining ones he might have will go fast.

excellent congrats, i was afraid to wait...still haven't o/ced mine yet but it is running very nice. @ stock it is faster than my p4 @ 3GHz is at most, except some encoding, but the amount of heat it puts off is much less. about the same time i ordered the m/b & cpu, my crt died so i replaced it with a 17" lcd, so my computer room temp went down about 5F and i am sure i am saving at least 50W when the computer is running @ 100%. the amd power tool is pretty cool, slows it down and drops the power and you never notice it.

I definitely thought about getting a 144, but there were several factors that told me I "needed" the 10x multiplier.
I'm most likely going to put this in the ASrock Dual SATA2 board (still haven't actually purchased a MB yet though). I only have Value RAM that doesn't really go ever 210 stable, and I plan to use stock cooling.
So with all those factors, if I want to reach at least 2.6 stable, the 10x multiplier will make it that much easier.

The best thing for me ist that I'm not in a big hurry. Actually, I stil need a case, PSU, and MB before I will even start his build. So waiting on the 146 was not a big deal for me.

Bob, defintitely let us know how well you combo OC's. From all there reading I've done in that last 2 weeks or so, the majority of recently purchased 144's are OC'ing up tp 2.7 (with a good MB and RAM) on Vcore of no more than 1.5 and air cooling. A few have actually reached 3.0 on a 144, although I doubt it stable. Good luck!

How's the OCing going, Bob?

I have ordered a 144 and an Asrock Dual Sata ... and expect them next week.
I would just like to be able to do a reasonable overclock.

The main reason for this upgrade was to get a motherboard that I can use for PCI-e.

How's the OCing going, Bob?

haven't tried it yet, i am going to be changing my psu soon (my 12V only has 1x@ 16-17A) with a antec 480W that has 2x18A on the 12V since they are on sale @ compusa. for ~$60, who can beat it. i was going to go the seasonic s12 430, but they are $100....

add to the fact that the area on the board where they put the cmos claearing jumper is hidden behind a drive bay (switche back to a smaller case, trying to liquidate so i put it all back into my lanboyI case) and i don't want to clear it due to power issues.

the bios states the bourad can do 450htt...i am assuming this is what the equivalent of the fsb nn the p4? and there are quite a lot of ram options. not that my cpu can do it but it looks like the 9x multiplier shouldn't be a problem hitting 2.5GHz, and i also went with one of the zalman hsf with the 92mm fan. i have the fan just plugged into the m/b without that little "speed control" as i always run my fans @ 100% anyway (have hearing problems, so the fan noise doesn't affect me). i know my ram will only do 215 @ 2-3-3-6 on my p4 even @ 2.7-2.8V so at least i know where i am at with that (ocz performance rev3, ocz doesn't recommend going over 2.8V on this series...).

i definately will keep all updated after i swap out psus.

I'm interested in getting the 146. I haven't upgraded in a while, I still have my 3200+ AthlonXP. I would need a new motherboard in order to use it though. I'm interested to know what the people posting in this thread would recommend. Also for combo deals that might save me a buck or two in shipping.

A lot of people have been talking about the 144 being a good choice if you don't have a board that OCs well. So what's the best board to go with this CPU?

since you are swithcing to skt939, are you going to keep your agp card or go pci-e?
