First place I looked was ebay and found these cpus selling for around that price. ebay is great for judging the value of an item, irrespective of its retail price.

Yeah, this seems to be the new going price for it. Great deal for a server setup on the cheap, though!

Brilliant, that's about 1/2 off. Anyone know of a good cheap dual opteron board?

I got a Gigabyte GA-7A8DW off eBay for $200 used, with Buy-It-Now.

I also got a pair of 242s for $225 shipped. If only I had waited...

Yeah - but I mean, ebay doesn't get you the ability to RMA if you need or whatever as easily. I would buy from Tank guys over ebay for the same price any day.

The only bad thing is that with opterons the Memory can only get up to 333MHz. I can bet that my dual Xeon 2.8GHz rig running at 800MHz FSB and memory at DDR 400 would be equal or beat it.

newer opterons can use ddr400.

these older ones cant.

cheapest modern board is probably that asus one k8n-dl i think something like that. still not that cost effective though, even at $85.

you could get a x2 3800 and an nforce4 for like $450 total, whcih would be only a bit more than 2 $85 240s and a $250 board.

not to mention the 3800 runs at 600 mhz higher speed.

I believe this can use DDR 400. These are CG stepping and I'm fairly certain they support the DDR 400, but I haven't had a chance to test that theory yet.

Apples and oranges.

Disagree. Perhaps "Fuji apples versus Gala apples", but not "apples and oranges".

if you are building a whole new system, it would definitely not be apples and oranges. i mean, outside of support for registered memory should matter. even the new sun servers are using the 939 chips now.

seems even worse, since apparently nforce4 + 3800 x2 is like $350 now (frys anyway)

I should also ADD that two single core opterons are faster than one Dual Core Opteron by 10%. Both have two CPU's but the twin single core chips each have their own front side bus.

No they do not cost that much more than a DFI Lanparty SLI or Asus A8N Premium Ultra Deluxe, often they cost about the same if you do not get one that has SCSI, Onborad VIdeo, extra PCI-X Slots, Extra LAN, etc. - That is stuff meant for 1U rackmount, not desktop chasis.

Here is an ASUS Dual 940 Board for around $200

Other Boards for less than $240 (240 Pun Intended)

An opteron 240 Will operate in Single chip mode, so any single socket 940 athlon FX board you find on ebay will work ok.
Opteron 240 is compatable with this motherboard

Opterons do not have a front side bus. All AMD64 architecture eliminates the FSB by putting the memory controller in the CPU.

Did you mean to say HTT (HyperTransport) instead?

Everything I read showed the opposite.

You can get two of these for $170 versus an X2 for $300, but you'll need an EPS12V PSU and workstation/server level board and an extra HSF. Probably still comes out cheaper, but it's doubtful you'll get SLI or PCI-E on that board unless you pay a premium and going X2 means not having to do a reinstall if you're already 939.

Depending on the board, several workstation-class boards (Tyan Tiger series and some MSI boards) don't requires EPS12V power. They actually take adavantage of 20pin+ a mole molex or 4-Pin Intel connectors. Quite nice. The server class baords (K8SE and K8WE for instance) require EPS12V - which I had not accounted for this weekend and am now shopping.

Plugging an X2 into your 939 board and NOT re-installing your OS does have some benefit.

Still a good deal for a chip if you want to go that route.

EH

I know that and that is what I meant to say. Some call it an Intergrated FSB. The differance between a Single dual core opteron and two single core opterons is the two single core chips each have thier own memory controller, giving the two single chips a boost in performance over a single socket dual core chip.
