I purchased this unit from Compgeeks about a month ago for a total cost somewhere around $70. No problems so far and I've tested it under 98SE, XP Pro, and OS 9 and 10. One thing I noticed on the current product information page at CompGeeks is the slightly conflicting "XP compatible" lines in the Spec and Requirement sections:

Successfully tested in Windows XP
Successfully tested in Windows XP Professional

I'm not sure if this means there is a known issue with XP Home, but those users may want to contact CompGeeks before purchasing just to make sure.

And, if it matters to anyone, CompGeeks takes a little while longer to ship than some of the lightning-fast places such as NewEgg, etc, but this is still the best price for this particular case that I know of.

Why is life so complicated?

I have a brand new Maxtor 80G Firewire (got on that Staples clearout deal weeks ago) that I haven't opened yet because I have another I've been using since last year. I also have an 80G Maxtor internal unopened. So now I'm thinking maybe I should sell my 80G external that I paid $80 for and buy this case and install my 80G internal in it. I'd still have a Maxtor 80G Firewire and yet have more options down the road. And of course I could sell the external I have for enough to get my money back and pay for this case.

I hate this. What's a person to do?

I assume this case has a fan? Is it quiet?

My external Maxtor is very quiet. I don't hear any fan in it, so I assume there isn't one.

I thought that the maxtor firewire drives were just regular IDE drives with the case. Well, it was like that at least with the 40GB drives.

i think all of them just use an ide-firewire bridge.

but IMO, sell the firewire drive, and toss the 80GB maxtor into your new bay. It should run cooler, and if it's a 7200rpm one, extra bonus to boot.

Just wish compgeek had a 5.25" version for the same price...

RTFM, from the specs:

8 x 8 cm Fan mounted on back.

Buy a Vantec Stealth if it bothers you. only $7 from SVC Compucycle.

I think that fan is really from the power supply in there but i guess it will do.... bought one for my dad so I only glanced at it for a while.
