I agree, SCSI multithreads so much better. I'm replacing out my 120JB and running this instead. I have only 20 Gigs used, so I don't think I'll need all that space. Does anyone know how loud these drives are and what's the best controller to mate with them?
See you all, I'm headed toward SCSI nirvana.

The drive is pretty loud compared to your newest ide's.

Not sure if there's any accoustic management.

As for controller, if you're only running a single scsi hd, and don't plan on upgrading,

cheapest would probably be a 2940uw from ebay.

Or get a 2940u2w (80MB burst). Ideally, you want an u160 for this drive (since that's the highest burst speed).

19160 or 29160 would work too... If you're cheap get a tekram 390u3w. It's similar to a 29160 but based on a diff
chipset.

Thanks guys. I just remembered I had a 19160 lying around.
I'm gonna run some benches and see how they compare to the 120JB.

Hey guys,

Just got mine in today.

Ran the warranty info on maxtor.

Looks like its good thru 11 of 2007!!!

So has a good 4 yrs 8 months left.

Impressive

I'll be more impressed if the drive actually lasts that long.

I've already had to RMA my 160GB 6y160p0 bought last november because under heavy load,
it clicks, then locks up the machine.

Not too impressed with the new ide's.

They did send me a 200GB for replacement, but running its serial showed warranty exp of 10/2003, which sucks, since the drive was bought in nov of 2002, so not even a 1 yr warr.

I didn't even think to run it for warranty length at maxtor. good catch I've had mine for 2 days and am painfully thinking about switching to Intel stuff....

Shopping for storage torn between IDE and SCSI and came across this deal which still seems to be "hot"

4.9ms seek time? Twice as fast seek times as WD IDE drives? That has to be good for something.

EXman you totaly lost me on your comment.

What do you mean by switching to Intel stuff?

sorry about that I just meant I was gonna get a new HD for an upgrade and thought why don't I upgrade my CPU and motherboard???

I did and wow the speed is amazing! BH7 and a 2.4 @ 3.0Ghz complements the SCSI very well

I think the SCSI HD is more to blame then the CPU for the speed but heck who care my system is Fast!!!

Well, this is just lovely.

Have had this drive installed for less than 2 weeks, and I'm already getting errors.

Specifically, windows seems to think that there are bad sectors according to event viewer.

Ran the maxtor diagnostics, came back with a SMART failure code of 898F44. Of cource, maxtor
has no information on what this means, so looks like RMA time.

Few days ago, when accessing some files, drive took what appeared to be a very long time to perform a DIR (in dos).

normally, this takes all of 1/2 sec or less to do. This time it took prob 10-15 seconds or longer. Didn't think anything of it at the time.

Next reboot (this morning), adaptec controller comes back with an error "SMART ERROR THRESHOLD EXCEEDED ON DEVICE ID:xx"

Never seen that one before.

What I did notice unusual, from day 1, was that when powering down, the drive made an unusual growling sound (dry bearing?).

None of the other drives in the enclosure ever made a sound like that.

We'll see how long the replacement lasts... Frankly, with all the maxtor RMA's I've done in the last 6 months (at least 5 or 6, from various machines), I'm losing confidence in maxtor quality.

you can use it but you won't be using the HD's full potential of U160

you'll get 80mb bursts instead if you use the 2940UW

So What's a good/cheap SCSI card I need to buy to Max the power of U160?

so according to anandtech's benchmark, the SCSI will lose to 7200RPM IDE drives on desktop realworld benchmarks?
Which benchmarks? I think you may be thinking of a single SCSI against ide RAID 0.

err the raptor benchmarks? the SCSI beats the IDE drives in raw benchmarks.. but in realworld tests, it loses

Is there any room in the Gateway 6400 Server for this. If yes, are there any special rails designed to fit them in the server? - I'm thinking of creating a RAID for my server with those . Please advise.. thanks!!
