Now if I wanted to upgrade the HD, throw in my own CDRW, my own DVD, and my own additional memory, will this work? OR is it Compaq still making closed architecture stuff where you cannot upgrade unless you go through Compaq?

This unit supports a laptop style multibay CD drive. The ram is a single DIMM. I didn't look at the hard drive but, I think it is standard desktop drive.

I have one of these in the office I bought as a test and am pretty happy with it.

The iPaq makes an excellent low maintenance terminal. Not something I would want as my primary computer. Its about as expandable as a notebook pc...meaning CPU, RAM, hard drive. CD requires Compaq branded components.

Honestly you might be better off getting a machine from dxyz on the For Sale forum here. he was selling a 750 Duron/256mb/20gb/50x for something like $340...take the rest of the money you woulda spent and search the Hot Deals for any of the $300 LCD deals.

Don't get me wrong, I like the iPaq...in my work enviroment where I call Compaq to come deal with it if it gives me any guff. Not something I would choose for the home.

I think the iPaq desktop is a flaming turd...The only way you can
use them with a CD/floppy is to buy Compaq's proprietary Multibay
drive. Most come with no legacy ports, so it's USB's way or the
highway as far as your perhipherals are concerned. They offer
NO expansion whatsoever (no PCI slots, no ISA slots, no PCMCIA
card slot). And for all that no-no-no they actually aren't
all that small. A loser.

If you want a super compact but not expandable desktop, then
get the HP e-vectra. MUCH smaller, comes with legacy ports,
supports standard slimline CDroms and standard USB floppy drives.

If you INSIST on the iPaq, you'd be a major fool to opt for the
memory. The MultiBay drive is worth a LOT more...
