Hot P180

I'm running the stock fans in the P180 at full bore and my case is still too hot. I upgraded my case and motherboard (Neo2/Lianli 1000v to A8N Sli Premium/Antec P180) last week. On the Neo my winchester 3500+ was usually around 32c idle. New case and mobo and the idle is 45. I have recorded it at 54 during heavy gaming. When i put my hand to the back of the p180 i feel warm air coming out but not very strongly. I have 80mm case fans that move WAY more air than these dual 120's. They are hooked to my antec new power power supply which has a special fan only connector. I'm wondering if 2 120mm fans might be too much for the neo's fan rail?

In any case if i wanted to upgrade to some better fans without the blow dryer effect what kind should i get?

edited to clarify P180 setup: The lower case fan was removed and an extra 120 is running in the upper intake.

You shouldn't have the TriCool's (included fans) connected to the Neo's Fan Only connectors, unless you have the fans on High. Course that kind of doesn't make a lot of sense.

I'd suggest putting them on a normal Molex, at medium and see how things go and adjust to what you'd prefer.

I think something is wrong with either your components or maybe the temperature sensor is not reading properly, because I have the P180 also. When I run my fans at 7v (low speeds) my system temps are between 34-36C and CPU is around 38-39C @ idle. At full load. With the fans running full speed 12v I get 36C system, and between 47-49C on the CPU. And I am not even using the stock fans. I'm using lesser output Coolermaster LED fans.

I say double check all your components to make sure everything is installed and functioning properly.

Both the top 120's are on high. I'm going to try putting them on regular molex to see if that is the problem. I'm concerned that my chipset cooler (fanless asus heat pipe) is too warm (mid 40's) but i'm sure i have everything installed correctly... i build a lot of computers My 7800GTX runs cooler than my 6800GT did and the raptors are in the lower chamber so they are not adding any heat. I think i have fan/psu issues. Of course it's possible that the mobo is reading the temps totally wrong, i have seen this many times before.

i switched the fans to another rail on my psu and they are spinning much faster, blowing more air etc. I guess the Neo Power is not up to powering 2 120mm fans on it's deticated rail.

The "Fan Only" connectors only supply 5V to the fans at it's default setting. Your fans were initially running at 5V. By moving them to a normal molex connector you are feeding them 12V. That's why you're seeing better cooling, not because there's anything wrong with the dedicated fan rail.

yeah, you are running those fans ultra low speed.

Put them on normal molex and put the fan on medium for a compromise of noise.

Gee, I don't know about switching the connectors.
My rig's similar to yours. I have the same fanless motherboard and a 3500+ (Venice core), and I'm not seeing temps anywhere near yours. I have my rear fan and my lower compartment fan connected to the "fan-only" connectors (TriCool switches set on high), and they run slowly because the PSU doesn't sense a temperature high enough to run them faster. My top-panel TriCool is connected to a regular 12V plug and is set on LOW. Only the XP120 heatsink fan is running at full speed.
My CPU temps are usually 32-37°, and I've never seen it go over 41° even during benchmark testing. My chipset remains cool to the touch (as do its heatpipe and heatsink) at all times.
Those 120mm fans are most definitely NOT too much for the PSU. They're spinning slowly because that's all the cooling the PSU is calling for.
I think the problem is with your CPU heatsink, not with the case or with the amount of air that's moving through it. Please tell us what you're using to cool your CPU.

I'm using an XP-90 with a Panaflo 92mm fan. i'm still seeing idle temps in the mid 40's even with every fan on high. My psu is not monitoring temps... i don't have it connected like that. All fans should be running at 100% and all are set to high. Less than a week ago the same hsf and cpu ran at 32 on my Neo2 and the highest i ever saw it was 43. Right now my idle is 44

Hmm...I live in Florida and always see a 3-5C increase in temps in the summer

I have an Antec SX830 with XP90 and Vantec stealth fan on Neo2 Plat....that I am switching to a P180

I have used in my SX830...3 panaflo 80mm fans L1A very quiet(case temps are 35C and cpu 41C..load ususally around 51C last time I checked several mon ago)..they small amount of air..I bought 2 coolermaster 120 mm fans that have a 22dBa and move air than the Panaflos which are 21dBa ..so I hope I see at least same temps

I did notice last year going from antec 480w true power to OCZ 520 w powerstream my temps dropped...I got better air flow in the same case...

There is no good reliable temp monitor unless the newer bioses are better ..I still use 1.36b

BTW I noticed my HSF was getting some dust which will need to be cleaned...any dust build up on the HS

Follow up..I got my P180 running last night..very quiet..I am only using one of the Antec tri cool fans

I have Coolermaster Blue LED 120mm 43CFM(doubt this is true) @ 22dba as exhaust..it does move air..??? more than my Panaflo L1A
I have a coolermaster Purple UV(why was not sure I wanted more light) in front of my HDD..same specs as LED fan...seems like Zero air is moving??? I am going to switch oreintation on the fan tonight
I am using one Antec tricool on top ...at low speed moves nothing...increase to medium and it gets noisy..defeats purpose of the case....still little air movement
I put on the VGA duct with Zalman 80mmx 15mm fan..

I have a OCZ 520w Powerstream in bottom with no fan...seems to be ok with air temps changes from exhaust fan on the PSU
A64 3200@2550@1.6v ...I use an XP90 with Vantec 92 mm stealth fan
I have 2 Seagate 200gb 7200.8 sata ncq II drives(these seems to run at 31/32 maybe 33C
BFG 6800 OC(non GT/Ultra unlocked at 365/870)

Unfortunately I DID NOT recheck temps before I changed so this is an issue(most of the temps I remember are 1-3 mo old...but on Neo2 Plat...BIOS 1.36b does not report accurately(seems to be off by 8-10C...you can reboot and be 37-39C, then42C, then 47...load was generally 51-53C range or 59-61C with inaccurate reads), case temp I can not recall but like 35-37C)

Anyway..in P180 with fans above noise is very minimal..the antec fan is the worst
CPU idle 47C
case temp 37-39C
HDD running 34-37C..this is the worrisome number...as I recall before with 80mm Panaflo L1A blowing on them they tended to be 32C or so
Also my videocard runs at 53C or so..this unchanged with VGA duct..I was really surprised(I use expertool to report temps and it reports case temp of 38-39C which is the same as in my older Antec....)

Remember I live in Tampa, FL(my temps were 3-4C lower over the winter in my older Antec

So I expected with larger 120mm fans supposed moving 1.5-2x more air and more fans...to get lower temps(I should note the OCZ use lowered temps vs antec 480 truepower becasue of its fan orientation when at the top of a case...it has a fan on front and back..draws air through and out of the psu)

P180 will not lower temps at least in my situation...Not sure how to expalin the noise reduction but it is very significant.....at least 50% or more...

My only real concern so far is the HDD temps....if they are 2-3 C higher I may get a louder fan to move more air..BTW temps seem same with drive bay door open/closed

I do need to run prime95/games to see what happens

P180 is more about silence then performance in my experience. That or the temp sensors on my mobo just sucks (its an asus board so it wouldn't surprise me). With Q/Q enabled on my 3400+ (proc at 1000 mhz/1.07 volt) it idles at 38C while the case temp is reported as 39C. This is on a 85 degree day with the AC on and so my room is about 75ish. I have a temp doc I can mount and check the real temps but I'm too lazy. It's ok though cuz I didn't buy this for performance, I wanted quiet operation and the P180 delivers that in spades. The dust filtering is also top notch once you tape up the holes on the back.

I am not concerned about a 1-2C rise on the cpu/case...I do not think that will be an issue with my o/c(temps within reason are overrated on o/cing IMHO)

but the hdd temp would seem to be bigger issue..hate to have HDD failure becasue of that

i was in the same situation as you until i put my fan on a regular molex vs the 2 fan only molex. but my temps didnt change much as i hoped.

before my temp was 40C cpu/42C case.
now its 34C cpu/38C case. i need to add another fan or higher output fans. my old antec case gave me 25C case temps and were under 25db, not sure how much air they pushed.

all this on stock amd 64 3200 heatsink on asus a8n-e

also do people tape up the back outline of the Powersupply hole. I did and then took it off to let the bottom mid fan blow straight out instead of just going through the PSU and out.
Hopefully it doesnt get to dusty, but if it does i may have to tape it up again.
