Hot Panasonic MiniDV at Sears

Two of the Sears stores in Iowa seem to be clearing out some of the older Panasonic stuff. I picked up a dv900 camcorder for $200 and a DVD player for $199. The model number on the DVD is rv-65 something, that's what the receipt says. It had a built in 5.1 decoder, and supposedly sold origionaly for $300+. The sales guy gave it to us as a substitute because I wanted to buy the model that plays mp3s, but they were out of stock.

Edit: Upon further examination, the miniDV camcorder was most likely the display model. While it is in new condition, the User manual and AV cord are missing (manual available online, still looking for the AV cable). Everything else was still there. You most likely won't be able to PM, but keep checking your stores. I went to our local sears today (Ft. Dodge, IA), and they are selling the pv-dv900 on clearence for ~$500. I bet when all the boxed items are gone, they will sell the display at a ridiculous price. Several other models were on clearence as well.

The store I bought mine at was in Souix City, IA.

And, mister poopy pants, since I've been to 3 Sears stores where they are clearing out Panasonic stuff, I do think this post is in the right place. You may either check your local Sears, or leave this Hot Deal for someone else.

WHOA, DV900 for $200. Can you give me the exact Sears location? I gotta call them and check this.

That is a blatant steal at $200.

Are you sure the model is DV900? Impossible...Please scan your receipt and post it here so the others can PM with your Sears price.

Sears will not price match a receipt. People were trying to do this with the Video games and Sears would match a local Clearance.

This is a garbage post that is impossible to create in the real world, where most of us live.

Should be in the brag and moan thread.

SimMike, you need to get out more!
MY Sears store near me in Albany New York has similar deals all the time. I've gone to Sears Stores in Wisconsin too and low and behold, they too had a counter with dirt cheap camcorders!
This part of summer usually sees many returns and such.

There are several things to be aware of:
1. Most of the Camcorders do not have accessories. You'll have to buy the battery, powersupply, ect on your own! My Sears doesn't have any cheap digital camcorders right now but has several sharp viewcams for 100 bucks...they normall o for at least 350, even online.
Keep in mind that the extra parts you'll need might cost 100 dollars or more extra.

2. There may be some damage. Especially on the very cheap models. Do some research on the camcorder, find out whats wrong...get them to let you borrow a powersupply and use it if you can.

3. No returns. You'd better make sure you'll be happy with it or can sell it on ebay.

This is definetly not garbage, and it might be more than just a regional thing, indeed, Sears has a liberal clearance policy! I've seen this at other stores too-a JVC ultra portable er for 300 dollars once at CompUsa, and a digital 8 sony with only a powersupply at Circuit City for 200-this camcorder I actually bought-and am quite happy!

Happy Hunting,
Ben

i bought a compaq presario 5834 for $400 over a year ago
and the only time i've had trouble is pure user error and the sleep issues (but i need to turn it off anyway)
so sears does have some deals from time to time--however i think this perception that they are overpriced is what holds them back in light of bb and cc and cu

edit: did it scan as such? that would be hot

The DV900 for $200 is something that I can definitely believe. I know for a fact that retail stores such as compusa and best buy sell items just nickles and dimes on the dollars simply to get rid of it. The reason being if they have those items for the inventory season, they'll get pennies and it'll hit their margins a lot more. I've seen a Sony TRV camcorder sold at compusa for $300, floor model, comes with everything.

more details, it was the Sony TRV820, and the pannasonic DV900 is an old model anyways, replaced by DV901 like the TRV820 which is replaced by TRV830

This is prolly somewhat similar to the Yamaha deal at staples then. Cuz the 20x came out they drop the 16x burner below cost just to get rid of the old stock. At the end everybody wins. The Chain store get rid of all there old stocks b4 its too late and the consumers got a great bargain.

The local sears here are doing some remodelling. I got several boxes of image rolls for Sharp fax machine for $6.24 each, compare to $30 at office supply stores. Also got Pinnacle DC10 Plus for $40, compare to $100 retail. This is a good time to check sears.

Interesting. My local Sears told me the only deal on miniDV camcorders was a JVC knocked down to $999 for $1499. I'll have to swing by occasionally to check out unadvertised deals. I want miniDV bad.

Yes, the DV900 is a legacy model replaced by the PVD901.

Some Sears stores I've been to have a display case with electronics items on clearence. There are usually several camcorders that I assume people have returned and/or display models. Check around the floor because they hide the display case in a corner of the electronics department.

Also, don't forget that Sears will price match most online stores (they'll add shipping though). I've done this often... I'd rather pay the same price at Sears than some no-name online store.

HGabriel,

You say the dv900 is a Legacy model, what does Legacy mean in this case? Just wondering, thanks.

Local Sears does 30% then 50%then 75% off closeout/return items. I've seen digital camcorders for less than $200.As indicated in other posts they are usually missing some accessories.

Any info on DV tapes? A tape is a tape and it will wither away after 2 or more uses, no matter if its a sony or a memorex. To me a tape cannot be digital, period! For any tape you have to have a head to read it. That head will deteriorate very quickly and your $1000 camera will be screwed! For now I am just planning on waiting it out until DVD-RW is implemented.

Legacy models are products that have been replaced with new models.

Example: Palm Vx is a legacy model. The new model is the Palm M500. Legacy usually means there is a new item with better features, better battery, whatever it takes to make the new model a little better than its predecessor.
