Bought the (after MIR)$99.00 PNY Verto Ti 4200 64MB Card from CompUsa -

Get it home and it's the 128MB 8X version

Is this hot? I just saw CompUSA has the 128 version for $250.00 I don't know if mine was a fluke or that is what is in every box???

I've heard the 128MB is slower than the 64MB and 8x is hype and doesn't perform much better than 4x AGP.

Doesn't seem bad for $99.00 after MIR. For the moment I am keeping it.

Note: the box says 64MB from PNY, but I got 128MB (Appears to be newer model?)

what is the clock/memory speed and the ram speed rating on the chip?
pretty hot if it matches the defalut ti4200 speeds!

How do I tell - is there a utility? There are heatsinks over the chips, so I can't tell visually

Wow, what a surprise. Maybe my story is legit then.

I PM'd the CompUSA deal over at CC and took home what I thought was the 64mb AGP4X.

After installing, my Device Manager (and in other info spots) tells me it is "with AGP8X" after the PNY GF4 Ti4200 64mb. I ran the bench mark tests, and they all tell me my card has AGP8X (although my mobo only can do 4X).

I just looked at the sticker on the back of my card and it has 64mb, AND AGP8X.
Now I knew there was a 8X version, but I thought it was in the 128mb version only.

Seems I got the best of both worlds ? I prefer the faster 64mb.

----

BTW, CC had a $20 MIR that expired. So they only PM'd the 40 + 10 of the rebate, since they thought (manager said) the rebate may have been extended - even though not shown on web page. They said if it is denied because of expiration, to take denial email to store and they will give me the $20 cash.

So I got the same deal almost. I actually pay less with CC because I pay less tax on $119 vs $129.

Result:
$118.98 not 119.99
(not sure how they got another $1.01 off since 110% PM would be more)
(however they normally don't do 110% when rebates involved - fine by me)
$118.98 + $7.14 tax (6% mich) = $126.12 with a $20 MIR = $106.12
Add stamp (.37) for the rebate.

Ran some tests:

AMD Athlon XP 1800+
Crucial 512mb 2100 DDR
Maxtor 20g 7200 ATA 133 (mobo set to ATA100 - no 133 available)
PNY GF4 Ti4200 64mb (title claims it is w/AGP8X - mobo only goes to AGP4X)
Compaq MV740 monitor
1024 x 768 resolution and 32 bit color.
DirectX 8.1
nVidia driver 40.72

Results:

3D Mark2000 v1.1 ----- 11066 3D marks
3D Mark2001 SE ------- 9466 3D marks
Quake 3D Arena Demo -- 164 frames per second

There were no labels at all on the box I received with 128 - large printed graghics say 64. I couldn't resist checking it out so I put it in my older box. All progams call it a 128 @ 8x. On my 2100+ @ 2130, I got 11036 in 3dmark2001se. It looks like more generic versions are $130+, so I am pleased with the PNY and lifetime warranty.

i got the same deal at CompUSA.

i noticed immediately that there were heatsinks on the memory (whereas my cheaper Inno3d gf4 ti 4200 64mb has no heatsinks) and i also noticed that the PCB was purple as opposed to the red PCB on the box picture (the box picture does have heatsinks though) and finally i was surprised to see it was an 8x agp device

however, i never wouldve thought to check the memory until you said something

lo and behold when the VGA bios flashes when u first startup the computer, it says 128MB !!!

to make things even better, the memory seems to be clocked at 513 mhz according to powerstrip!!! (perhaps thats where the heatsinks come in handy). powerstrip puts 513 barely in the yellow range instead of the green, but perhaps this is a misconception of powerstrip since it expect 128mb 4200s to be clocked at 444. i underclocked it to 503 mhz just in case (which puts it in green, until some one tells me i shouldnt worry)... shouldnt be much difference between 503 and 513, and still a big difference between 444 and 503

so basically it seems we have the speed of the 64MB version in a 128MB version for $99 after rebate. the cheapest u can get a 4200 64mb on pricewatch is $108 shipped. a 128 is easily $50 extra or more... an 8x agp card is a few dollars more... and a 128mb at 500+ memory mhz is even more!! this is hot!!!

it seems PNY isnt bothering to produce 4x 64mb versions anymore, but since their box so boldly proclaims that the 64mb version is faster, they have to make the 128mb version run at 64mb speeds

im going to have to get me another one of these... is this correct what im hearing that Circuit City will price match a MAIL IN REBATE?? it would be awesome to be able to walk out with card for $99 + tax without hassling with rebates...

Does the 128mb version have DVI out? The 64mb doesn't, at least according to the CompUSA specs. But the information on PNY's website doesn't mention much of anything specific about the card, it is all just regurgitated GeForce4 specs. And CompUSA's website doesn't rule out a DVI connector, but it is a bit unclear.

Could you look at your card and verify for me?

How loud is the fan on the card? I am debating the Abit OTES 4200 card as well, but it is reported to be rather loud.

Last question: what power supply do you have in your system? The PNY website says that a 350W supply is required. I currently only have a 300W, but it is a good one (Antec). I am wondering if I will be OK with that.

Thanks.

both the 64mb and 128mb (8x agp) versions of the 4200 are dual-head with one vga connector and one dvi connector... you can clearly see that in both pictures at pny.com as well as on the picture on the box. and yes, my pny has a dvi connector

im running it with a 400watt Antec Smartpower so i wouldnt know about running it on something lower... i think a GF4 can work fine in any system 300watts and above, and i cant think of any reason why PNY vid cards would be expecially different...

and i cant hear the card fan above the pretty quiet fans in my computer (4 80mm Antec case fans, + Antec psupply fan + Panaflo H1A on CPU). im not running ultra quiet PC here mind you, just average soothing hum that you never notice unless u listen for it or sleep in same room

edit: http://www.pny.com/home/techsupport/faqs/readfaq.cfm?mainid=177&row=20 shows that 300watts is acceptable, but 350 is recommended.

Seems like a good deal if this can be PM'ed to CC and if it turns out that you do not get the card it can be returned to CC since they do not have a 15% restocking fee. I going to see if I can get 128MB version 8x later today, and if I don't I'll just do a return and head over to CUSA. Thanks for pointing this out.

I don't see how you can get the same deal at CC. The $30 rebate at CompUSA is a CompUSA rebate. I don't think they'll honor it if you submit a CC receipt.

Kiss lots of butt. Not every store will do it. Generally they will do it possibly if the rebate is only for the other store. If it's a mailinrebate form manufacturer forget it. Just gotta be nice. Would work especially well if you were making another larger purchase.

Yeah, my CC definitely will pricematch the after rebate price. If the card he gets is the 128MB version, I will probably do the same thing....
