I bought one of these last week and it works great. My HD is 12.7mm and it would not fit in the case so I hooked it up without the case until I found an enclosure for 12.7mm HD.

Does anybody know what type of hard drives were used in the old model Nomad Jukebox? I have one I haven't used in ages, so I figured I might as well take out the hard drive and put it to a good use.

BTW. many of these have a mini-usb conenctor onthe drive.... and some are propieritrary.

I just ordered 4 different models/manufactures from NewEgg.com....all four had the mini-usb plug...but two of them were propieraritary. So if you lose the cable, your SOL.

I HIGHLY recommend getting a USB enclosure that uses the standard USB A/B cable.

The one I got from softwareandstuff has a mini-USB connector (well they would, the regular connector would be bigger than the enclosure!) and it's not proprietary as I've connected the drive to my flash drive cables and it works too.

In fact the drive comes with a cable that has two USB connectors (as well as the mini-USB), so if you're working through a non-powered hub, you can plug it into two sockets to get enough power. It's not needed if you're plugging straight into the back of the PC of course.

Edit - and it is USB 2.0 high speed (480Mbps) not USB 2.0 full speed (12Mbps, aka USB 1.1) although obviously are backwardly compatible so will run on USB 1.1 too.

Bought 2 last week both work great.

One problem I've ran into is that the promixal USB connection works, but the distal one seems to only provide additional power.
It's like this on both units.

This a dumb question. But can you use this on your regular desktop. I have an additional 80GB hd that i cant find space to put in my tower. This sounds to be a good price and i was wondering if it can just be used with desktops also. Thank you.

It can be used with desktops. But you have to keep in mind that this external case hold 2.5" drives (laptop hard drives usually). Most drives that are bought for desktops come in 3.5" which won't fit this external case.

Just a heads up.

The Vantec 2.5" USB 2.0 drive looks much nicer with a silver finish, but has a total [shipped] cost of $20.06

The PCMS BLUE ALUMINUM EXTERNAL USB 2.0 CASE costs $12.91 total shipped. 35% difference in price.
But that PCMS one is really ugly. I want black. =(

Do these enclosures require the use of an external power supply or are they powered by the USB connection?

Frys has a Tritton aluminum 2.5" enclosure today for FREE AR. I picked one up this morning...have this blue one coming from this deal also to compare.

The one from Fry's looks pretty nice though.

No need for bus power... saves a USB port.

[EDIT] Tiger Direct Pissed me off on something else, I decided to go with the $12 one [/EDIT]

Ok I got this blue aluminum case from this deal for $12 and am comparing it to the Tritton case I got at Fry's a few days ago (Free after rebate). This blue case is a POC compared to the Tritton. The Tritton has a nice slide out chassis for the drive, this blue POC has only a connector -- your drive can bounce around. The Tritton has the capability for aux power in case you wanna run it off a USB hub, this blue case does not. The Tritton feels much more solidly built, and uses a standard USB cable...this blue case uses a proprietery cable (don't lose it) and feels very cheapo (ie the LED is just sorta sittin there, the case screws together, no support for your drive inside the case, very thin aluminum)

All in all the free (after rebate) case at Fry's is an order of magnitude better than this one.
