I read up on 24 Hour Fitness on Epinions and knew going into the place that the salespeople are slick. As such, I was keen to the fact that you are supposed to haggle until you get a rate you like.
My strategy:
First off, never give them a phone number you will answer. I have one of those free voicemail #s so I won't get the sales calls.
I got the tour and he sat me down to talk rates.
I told the salesman that I was currently in a club and was considering switching. He gave me a price: ~$850 flat for full World membership for 3 years, $8/month after that.
He asked if that was OK. No, I told him it was more expensive than I currenlty pay (a lie, and my current club is kinda stinky).
So he shuffled some papers and offered $766 for 3 years, $8/month after.
I said that was better, and that I had to do 2 things: get the quote in writing "to show my employer, who would subsidize" (i.e. make sure he doesn't back out) and then figure out how to cancel my existing club.
He tried to then give me some BS about my employer needing to pay for the reg fees for 250 ppl at once, and I told him to shove it. I told him the employer will only pay at the individual rate. He took the hint.
My plan is to say that my employer will not pay that much and that I need a better rate.
So my question to you: have you joined 24HF and what rates have you negotiated? Let's see how low they can go!

I'm glad you brought this up. I just got a few calls from the "slick" salesman. First off, very annoying. They call you just to test how much they can squeeze from you. I had called them once about a possible a group of guys from working joining the club. They were drooling and tried to sell us a $240 init fee + 40/monthly. It's been awhile since I joined any clubs but I bark at the idea to pay for an initiation fee so you pay them more money each month. $40 backs was too much for me to start with and will never pay a dime to start. This was from the bay area, CA.

I shoped around in the area and noticed each 24hr has different rates. The Fremont location advertised a no initiation fee $30/ month deal. The pricing is regional, I think, so you should just shop around somemore.

If anyone know of a 24hr in the bay area that has a decent deal, please let me know. I'm looking for an All Clubs memebership.

Not to crap, but this belongs to OT
The deal is that they ask a certain price and I have documentation that you can get lower. If more people contribute their insight, we can see if we can really get to the bottom of this deal. This is not necessarily a tech deal, but them's the breaks in this forum.

I signed up for bally's fitness 2-week free trial and they tried to get me to sign up. THe problem was that their rates were NO WHERE NEAR the rates I saw online and on television.

The rates were suppose to be $75 activation, $9 per month, three times a week no contract (pay as you go plan). When I asked about that rate, they either ignored it or found a work around to that rate. They wanted $150 activation, $30 a month for 2 years and then $8/month after that. I was like FOOK that, I just want the 2 week trial then.

I ended up going only twice out of the 14 days.

Check this out, I have a 24 Hour Fitness membership for $19 a month and I didn't have to pay a starter fee or anytype of fee whatsoever. This is the all-club package so I can go to pretty much all the clubs except like 5 in the US which are the premier yuppie-ville one in like Orange County, CA.

When I was at school (a couple years ago) the 24 hour fitness club in berkeley, ca charged my girlfriend and me $49 per month (for the both of us) for their all club deal. If I remember correctly, the deal was for married couples, but if you brought in mail that had the same address for both of you they were okay with it. (credit card companies will send you a montly bill wherever you want).

I used to think the price was okay (not great since the school gym was free), but when I moved to manhattan I realized what a good deal it was. Gyms here charge $80 a month and are not nearly as nice or new as 24 hour fitness. Plus, you are lucky if they are open passed 9 pm.

Bally's had a friends and family deal recently.

I signed up through my girlfriend...got 99 bucks for the whole year, no contract-and the option to renew at the same rate.

Ask around...

I know it isn't 24hours, but still a fitness club.

Some of the YMCA gyms in Silicon Valley are very nice and a nice alternative to the Bally's & 24 Hrs Fitness' of the world.
