Why would anyone want to stare at a low res TV instead of computer monitor?? Why not just load the damn Linux on your PC?? Hmmm.. This is for people that have too much $$$ on their hands.

They wouldn't, that's why it comes with a PS2 -> VGA cable, and requires it's use.
I believe the reason behind it is to be able to develop games to work on the PS2. However, until sony gives us some way to burn and boot these games, it's still kind of useless.

For people who want more details about this, you should check out the community forums at this place. The funniest thing about all of this is that people still claim that the Xbox is more like a computer than a PS2 when the PS2 is the one trying to be the computer. LOL, Real Player for PS2 is already in development.

Exactly. Linux on a ps2 is pointless. Takes away the ability to play games.

This kit is for people who want to learn about programming for PS2 hardware, but can't afford Sony's DevKit, as they are far more expensive. This will not make an effective general-purpose workstation; the PS2 architecture is designed for gaming, and its memory is not sufficient to sustain the big linux desktops (Gnome and KDE)... Though it can easily manage one of the lighter window managers, it is not intended as a replacement for a desktop computer.

On the plus side, it should be not much more than a recompile to make games that run on both i386 Linux and PS2 Linux, as they both have full support for OpenGL and the SDL.

So wait....is it going to cost more than $200 when it is released? If not then this isn't really a deal per se.

Plus, once the kit is released I am sure people will figure out how to roll your own linux on PS2 so you will probably be able to get your own much quicker.

I believe $200 will be the regular price for this kit if I remember correctly. I read an article about this over a month ago so the details are a little foggy.

According to some of the things that i have heard about this is that one even though Sony says the Hard drive is not compatible with ps2 games according the japanese beta testers you can partition the drive and one partition for games and one for Linux (how much space do you need for linux anyways) The network card is also included, and if developers start making games for it you have the vga adapter (anyone with a dreamcast and not a Hidef tv knows this is a plus). So if you were going to buy these things anyways then this owuld be a deal because you get all that plus a linux abilities.
