I'll take my $299 EVGA 7800 GT with free COD2, 20 pipes, superior OGL performance, lifetime warranty, and overclocked to 500/1200 anyday over this. Oh yeah, EVGA allows third party cooling solutions too without affecting the warranty. I switched from an x800xl, the image quality is much better on the 7800 because I can run higher resolutions with ease.....Thanks anyway...

EDIT NM thought it was the higher end version not xl. Not bad though.

The thorough xbit labs article actually shows the xl and gt running pretty near even when it comes to high res and eye candy turned up. I'm still trying to decide between the two though... EVGA seems to be a more reputable company than C3d.

Too bad your "superior OGL performance" is not so superior any more, since the release of Catalyst 5.12. Some people value image quality and will pay a few more bucks for the superior IQ of the ATI cards. Of yourse if you compare a 7800GT to an X800XL, the GT wins. The thing is, we're talking about an X1800XL here.

Theres nothing wrong with C3D, they have a reputation of having the chepeast cards for ATI. I've got a C3D X800GTO and have had no problems with it, but I would rather have an EVGA card because of the excellent warranty that covers overclocking.

This is a good price for an X1800XL but remember C3D only has a 2 year warranty.

If you read my post, you would have seen I upgraded from an x800xl. And I see zero problems with the 7800 image quality, certainly better than the x800. Looks beautiful on my Mitsubishi SB2070 22inch CRT.

If you are running on an LCD, be aware of the texture shimmering on the 7800GTx's. And, owning both a 7800GT SLi system and a X1800XT system running on Dell 2005's, the ATi has better IQ....while not nessasarily the case in all things, enough on most titles to see the difference. And the speed differences are, for the most part, not even noticable. And....the X1800XX hse room to improve driverwise (the 7800xxx is pretty much derivitive of the 6xxx series, the X1xxxx series is totally new) and has features the 78xxxx doesn't. If you have the idea of going SLi and run on a CRT(and are willing to deal with the SLi problems), get the GT. If you are on a LCD, get X1800XL. plain and simple.

Nvidia has been king of the hill for IQ for a long time. In fact, for the price/performance market, ATI doesn't even compete. Nvidia has supported SM 3.0 for a good while now. All 6600 and 6800 cards and up support SM 3.0.

ATI only has the paper-release x1600, the x1300 and the x1800 to support SM 3.0. Of those, the x1300 can't hit 20 FPS on any game that makes good use of SM 3.0 and the x1600 is a paper release - it doesn't exist yet.

There are already games, noteably Age of Empires 3, that look a hell of a lot better with SM 3.0.

So, no, it's not correct at all to say that ATI is the current leader in IQ.
