Go to www.radiohead.com and you can choose how much you want to pay for their new album! Granted, this is only for a digital download of the album but I think it's hot deal for people that don't download music without paying. This is a great concept and I believe other bands should follow in their footsteps! Thanks Radiohead!
ALBUM OUT ON OCT. 10th!!!

If you're gonna put $0.00 you'd better use p2p to get the album so that you don't make radiohead pay for the bandwidth without paying them a single cent back.

My favorite radiohead songs:
1. Creep
2. The Bends
3. High and Dry
4. Karma Police

Any songs on this new album that are as good / similar to those listed?

Not my kind of music at all but a really cool idea. And I agree with fleshconsumed. People make the argument that when you download from p2p you're hurting the RIAA, not the artists, but in this case you're definitely hurting the artists, and making it unlikely we'll see things like this again. In other words, don't be a dick.

@fleshconsumed and @nunya, You don't get it at all. Free =! copyable. The experiment purposefully includes £0.00 as an option, if that was what you're willing to pay. If someone wants to build a workable model out of this, they need to know how many people are willing to buy the music at every price point. For instance, there are plenty of people who are able to purchase this music for £0.00, but will choose not to buy it, or pirate it.

Why the hell would you pirate this music if the artists WANT to GIVE you a license?

I'm not a big RadioHead fan, but I paid for this music. I think I paid like $3, but that's a data point that they can use. £0.00 is also a data point they can use.

Indeed, don't be a dick - if you want this music, purchase it legally at whatever price you see fit, even if its £0.00. Radiohead isn't trying to guilt you out of money. I'm sure that they're comfortable with the commercial success that they've achieved.

I'm not sure you understood my point. If you put 0.00 for a price and download album, you will be downloading album from servers hosted by Radiohead, they have to pay for the bandwidth, however much that is, but they don't get anything back from you. In this case they are actually losing money, so you might as well download album from p2p because that way you don't make Radiohead pay for bandwidth.

Sure, if you put 0.00 price and download album, they will get one more data point to their demand/price data, however they will be losing money.

Geeze, attack the guy who likes to try before buy? Their style changes so much between albums that I have no idea what to expect. I'm a huge fan of all their previous work, so I'll probably end up buying the boxed set.

The free option just opens up the album to a larger audience who otherwise might not be willing to pay for something they haven't heard.

Here's another view on Radiohead's marketing strategy. I don't know that I agree, but the article raises some interesting points.

Or, view of some shill who is obviously invested in the sinking ship known as the RIAA.

I'm not sure that the lead editor of Overclockers.com is a RIAA shill

Yeah, because that website has soooo much reputation that their lead editor could not possibly be involved in other industries. I mean, the website layout is just too professional to be done by someone who could have other interests.

I doubt that, but I find the article remarkably short-sighted. The world isn't going to end if (when) the music industry eventually finds all of their distribution and promotional outlets swallowed up by the internet. The labels, or new guys who can do it better, are going to be needed and sought after by artists for promotion so they can rise above the sea of "a million garage bands [with] five hundred fans each," as he puts it.

Yeah, the current state of music marketing on the internet is still very much a scavenger hunt. But that will change as all the money shifts to the internet. Things will be different, because the average person has no interest in hunting through indie snob blogs and forums, using trial & error and the latest P2P app of the week, or dealing with the people whose answer to everything is "there's good music out there, you just need to know where to find it."

Actually, I'm not sure what good the major labels are to up-and-coming artists right now. Besides demanding immediate commerical success right out of the gate (and the very real possibility that your band will be forced to break up for contractual/financial reasons when that doesn't happen), the labels seem to be failing pretty miserably at the promotional game too, as their traditional media outlets gradually die and they completely ignore so many groups of potential consumers.

You should all read this. Discusses what's happening to the music industry, and what it has to do to survive...one of the ideas Rick Rubin suggests sounds a lot like Radiohead's plans...

(if you don't have a new york times account you might need to sign up, but it's free and they don't spam you and it's the best newspaper out there, etc etc).

Dude if you want to preview the album it's been posted by way of youtube clips on rollingstone.com for the past week.

I paid $20 for it, there are a few songs that I want on the bonus cd which will hopefully be released separately at some point. $80 for the box set is too much for me, especially considering I don't have a turntable for the vinyl.

Bitrate is only 160kbps which sucks IMHO for original material exclusively released in this manner.

Overall, it's different but I like it. I would gladly trade Nude or Faust Arp for Down is the New Up from the bonus CD, but I'll live with this and be happy.
