Yea they don't seem as great the Powerizer 1800 only got

Powerizer 1800 = 102.1 minutes

And I take this quote out from the reviewer

Depending on where you buy your batteries, you can often get more bang for the buck from lower-rated cells, which may sell for significantly lower prices. (Note too, that there are some cheap brands of cells that just aren't worth it regardless. (IMHO) - For instance, the Powerizer 1800s tested worse than Sanyo industrial 1600 cells from RipVan100.) Bottom line, battery cost isn't terribly relevant for digicam usage

Dunno how this will fare vs. the 2000 mah we in theory are getting or the 700 mah AAA batteries I want.

Anyone know of a great charger for NiMHs? I am horrible about draining them all the way or forgetting which have been used, so I need one that will take care of my batteries for me. I'm looking at this one, which comes with some 1800s too, but don't know if it's really worth it and if that's the best I can do for a reasonable priced charger.

Thanks

EDiT and niuniu6 - I use the Maha/Powerex MH-C204F. It's really good. Charges the batteries in about 3 hours. It has a deep discharge cycle that you can use periodically. I've had several batteries that wouldn't hold a charge very long after some use. I put them through the discharge cycle, recharged them and they're like new. Very nice charger. Maha also makes a newer model of this charger, model MH-C401FS. It supposed to be better than mine. Newegg has these chargers. You can also find them at SunnBattery.com and Thomasdistributing.com among others.

Another vote of confidence here for the Maha battery charger.

Yeah, I have the MH-401FS... It's a great charger.. It is the best of the best.. And only $49 with PowerEX 2000mah or $53 with PowerEX 2200mah batteries at newegg.. My dad uses the powerex batteries and says they are great.. I've never used anything other than Nexcell and they have performed great as well.. I just purchased 48 2100mah Nexcell AA's on ebay at 1.10 a piece.. Pretty good deal on namebrand cells..

Nimh is great!

I use the Lightning Pack 4000N from ripvan.com

I think this is the best charger in the biz. Very small, Negative delta-V, FAST, retractable plug, temperature control system.

Is it a must to have a maha charger with discharge feature? it seems NiMH has no memory effect and can be charged any time

They all have memory effect. Li-Ion has the least, then NiMH, then NiCd.

Here is a good article in Home Power Magazine (pp. 35-36 in the file). Note: The PDF is about 2.4 MB.

The newest MH-401FS doesn't have the "conditioning" feature.. It does however charge all of the cells individually.. Which is great.. Not all cells perform the same, and to get the best charge out of them, they should be charged individually.. Like I have a charger that came from radio shack.. I know, don't be mean! But anyhow.. It has -deltaV and it has worked fine in the past.. It however charges two of them in series.. So, it calculates it's cutoff point by the two cells combined... I don't have any exact figures here.. But let's say it is looking for 2.6 volts as the cutoff.. One battery gets to 1.4 and the other to 1.2.. Well, the 1.4 is charged much more, and probably too much because the other somewhat dead cell has caused it to be charged more to get to that magic 2.6.. So you have one cell being overcharged and possibly getting damaged and another not quite all the way charged.. Not good..

As an experiment.. I charged up a set in my radio shack chrager.. Let them set for a day and then did the slow charge on the new MH-401FS.. One of them was done in about 30 min's.. The other cell charged for about another hour.. So a hour and a half total.. It was not fully charged.. Some will toss out that this isn't really a good test as that one cell could be damaged and it had lost more juice than the other.. But you get the idea...

I would say it is much better to have a charger that will charge each cell by itself than to have one that conditions.. I mean, you usually replace the batteries when they are dead.. So there is no need to discharge them or "condition" them anyhow..

Hope someone gets something out of that instead of me just yacking about nimh batteries...

Based on everyone's comments, I am pretty sure I will get this charger for the following reasons:

- Says it can charge singles or groups, as you have all indicated is good
- Says it can discharge, which you also say is good
- Can charge 10 at a time
- Is cheaper than the maha and comes with 10 batteries (1800s tho)
- I don't care about speed of charge, since I charge overnight and will have many more batteries than I need so I can keep some ready to go when I need them.

Anyone see any flaws with my reasoning? I really want a low-maintenance solution, so I like the idea of being able to charge 10 at once for when I run out and need to recharge them all at the same time.

I swear they just changed that. Updated charger to say through 2200 as well and I think the price went up a buck or two. I'm pretty much sold if they're 2000s now.
