Compuvest.com has refurb HP Deskjet 952c printers for $91. These are recently discontinued printers by hp (I think they were replaced with the 960c that sells for $199)
The nice thing about this printer is it uses the 42ml #45a black ink cartridge instead of the 23ml #15 cartridge.
They are refurbs but they come with a 1 year warranty and for $9.10 more you can add on a 3yr warranty. Mine came to $118 and change shipped with the warranty.
Eopinions Eopinions reviewers though it was a fairly decent printer.
And Reseller Ratings reviewers don't think it's too bad of a company.

I called and the guy says they have 124 of em left.
The printers come with both the color and black cartridges.

I've always been hesitant to purchase refurb items. But for a great deal, I can change my ways... It helps that I like the HP Printers and I may need to upgrade mine soon.

I figure with getting the 3 year warranty, even if anything does go wrong in the next 3 years, I can always invoke the warranty. I've had HPs in the past and they have been pretty good.

This is an excellent printer with a unique feature which has disappeared from the rest of the current 9xx line--the dedicated 4 x 6 photo tray. It lets you keep a stack of 25 sheets of photo paper loaded and ready to go--just slide the tray forward and it automatically recognizes it. It can also accept the optional duplexer (about $79 list), to automatically print on both sides of the paper. I paid $199 for this printer a year ago, it was originally $249.

I agree with BigJim. The 4x6 photo tray is a great convenience. Nice printer. I've never purchased a refurb printer, but for the price, with the warranty, could be a great deal.

Interesting deal... any idea who the 3 year warranty is with? Is it worth the paper it's printed on? Unfortunately, you can't double the 1 year warranty with your credit card because they don't extended warranties on refurbished items. I have a 930C which I got for free with that great e-stamp deal from buy.com a couple of years ago. My daughter still uses my old 855C which she's been complaining about (it's been jamming on her). I could give her my 930C and keep this for myself .

Except that these are likely starter (ie, half full, or less) cartridges. But even the half-full color cartridge could be worth $30 alone. Good point.

I bit, and I took the extended warranty, too. Used my AMEX Blue card in case they lower their price on this (so you folks out there, don't buy it yet!). I like my 930C but always felt that the paper mechanism was kindy cheesy -- and that's actually intentional, it is how they got it to be cheaper. The 952C's mechanism is supposed to be much better. I think it's the same as the 970C except for duplex. BTW, HP's website has the 970C refurb available for $210, and the 990C refurb for $250.

Now I have to learn how to use refill kits for these.

I can't believe that HP is actually using that expensive #15 black cartridge in the 900 series now. When I had my choice of printer from e-stamp, I picked the 930C primarily because I didn't like the cartridges that the 940C used.

Sadly, because they are in Washington state and I am in NY, I won't have it for more than a week because I didn't feel like spending more than $18 for shipping :-(. I think even if it ships Friday, I won't have it until a week from Monday.

BTW I just found a guy on ebay selling the duplex units (C6463A) for $45.

Thanks for posting this!

Hmm.. I just checked on Cnet shopping board, and they have a growing list of people complaining about them here.

Strangely, this was using the link found on Compuvest's website. They are allegedly a CNET Certified Merchant.

Also, they no longer seem to be listed on Bizrate, even though they have a link to them, too. What's going on? I guess the good news is I used my AMEX Blue so in theory I should be covered if I get ripped off.

Mine just showed up. I'll let you know what shape it's in.
I checked my credit card and they charged me exactly what they said they were going to.

Did you order your printer on Wednesday when you initially posted? I assume you must live near them to have gotten it so quickly (or else you paid $$ to have it shipped faster). Please verify that it comes with new HP cartridges, too, although if it's HP refurbished I assume it will.

i have a 600 series HP printer that lasted 2.5 years before it died, then the 612c i got died within 6 months.

i'm having lots of problems with my 930c, usb freezes, more constant paper jams, ink problems even with new non-refurb in cartridges. my next printer will NOT be an HP... (unless its free after rebate)

my dads 648c works fine, but the quality is awful, and its so slow. i wonder how long before it dies out

Actually I live in New York State and this came from Seattle, WA. I'm impressed with Airborne's ground shipping speed. It shipped Wednesday night and was here today. I am annoyed though that they don't have you sign. Fortunately my neighbors are honest people.

I wonder if this is just a brand new unsold printer. The box was a little beat up but everything inside looks brand new. It came with 2 starter cartridges. A 78d color and a 45g black. The install before date on the color cart is July 2002 and the black is April 2002. I don't think this will be a problem though. I just have to dig out a USB cable and I can test this printer.

That's great news about it shipping via Airborne. I figured it came UPS and I'd be waiting for the 6 day shipping time from WA to NY. Also great news about it looking like new!

Airborne's site claims ground from WA to NY is 4 days, so even if they just do that it's still better than UPS would be. Hopefully they won't decide to ship mine via UPS :-(.

Finally found a usb cable. Printer prints great. I haven't done any super high quality stuff but looks pretty good on normal settings. Have to drag out the photo paper and give it a shot.

My printer shipped, also via Airborne! Their website doesn't say when to expect it, so I guess I will have to watch it and see how it makes its way across the country. It sure would be nice to see it fly!

Was it still under warrantee or was it only 3 months? I would hope that you get it replaced if it was still covered.

I haven't had nearly that many problems with my 930. I get occasional jams, but they mainly seem to happen when I reload paper while it's being fed (ie paper had run out). The 930C paper mechanism is not as good as it should be. It's meant to be cheap, and it is. Back when we had the free postage, I tried printing envelopes. At one point, something got jammed and I ended up finding some broken pieces in the paper area, it was as if something in the envelope feed had broken off. I haven't tried to print an envelope since then since I have no real need for it, anyway. And yeah, I probably should have had it taken care of since it was under warrantee. I think my double warrantee is about to run out.

I had some problems getting the 930C to work with USB originally, but it seemed to be due to a failed driver upgrade. I installed stuff, started fresh, and it has worked fine. One strange thing I see is that if I get a printer error (out of paper, etc), my Orinoco wireless USB adapter gets disabled. But I think that is more likely to be an Orinoco driver issue than HP.

I guess you've had some success with the 600 series, but I wouldn't expect great things from them, and certainly am not surprised that it's slow.

Too bad I don't need a printer. But I think my dad's looking for one. I'll send the link to him.

Thanks Freejack2!

Well, I got my printer on Tuesday (gotta love Airborne's 2 day "ground" coast-to-coast service, I wonder how long that will last!) and my experience is not as good as Mark's. The printer itself is fine, although there is no tape holding stuff together as I've had in new HP printers (also the box is taped on the bottom with masking tape, as if the original owner opened it from the bottom). What really bothered me, however, was that the cartridges came installed in the printer, as opposed to new in the box as Mark received. Initially, the printer gave me errors when I loaded the cartridges, but after swapping in another set from my 930C, they seem to work. The color cartridge also was not printing fully in the blue, but I think after doing a clean cartridge cycle it may be ok. I was also initially concerned about the color cartridge possibly being a refilled (and probably swapped by the original owner) one since it had green dots on the top, but I've since been told that some #78 cartridges do have green plugs instead of black. I'm not really sure what to do, whether I should contact HP or CompuVest about the cartridges. Ideally, I'd like fresh cartridges -- while the printer is advertised as refurbished I don't think it is unreasonable to expect factory fresh cartridges in the box. Suggestions?

Oh, and in browsing CompuVest's site looking for return information, I found a line which stated that extended warranties do not apply to refurbished items. If that's the case, then they owe me $9.10 back. The receipt does not say it's refurbished, so AMEX should be willing to double the one year warranty for me. In fact, the lack of refurbished notation probably gives me a stronger argument with HP for new cartridges, although they may tell me to go back to where I bought it from.
