For TX. I don't know if other states have this.. A couple bucks for less harassment doesn't seem bad.

Beginning on January 1, 2002, you can add your name, address and telephone number to state-sponsored ?No Call Lists,? which will identify you as someone who does not wish to receive telemarketing calls. You can choose to register a residential telephone number for one or both of two ?No Call Lists? sponsored by the Public Utility Commission (PUC.)

STATEWIDE ?DO NOT CALL? LIST

The first list, a statewide ?Do Not Call List,? will apply to all telephone marketers operating in Texas. There is a registration charge of $2.25 for each residential phone number to be included in this list only. Your registered residential telephone number(s) will remain on this list for three years.

?ELECTRIC NO CALL LIST?

The second list has been created to prevent calls only from Retail Electric Providers (REPs) and telemarketers calling about your electric service. There is a registration charge of $2.55 for each number placed on the ?Electric No Call List.? Numbers placed on this list will remain on the list for five years. Both residential and business numbers can be registered for the ?Electric No Call List.?

Only problem I see is that its for telemarketers in your state. Telemarketers in other states would have easy access to these lists i would imagine and would be a great way for them to get your number, although i guess they can get your number easily anyway. Cool though

TN has had this for over a year now. You opt out by signing up online. If they telemarket somebody on the list, they can be fined up to $2000.

Works pretty well. My calls went way down.

I hope you guys know that you can just ask the telemarketer to remove your name from their calling list, and if they don't they're violating federal law and can be fined a hefty fee. Yeah, it's a lot of trouble, but to me, that's better than paying $3 just to only block calls from your state.

Above is a link for folks in Missouri to keep most of those f*****s from calling them. It doesn't help if you fill out a form to win a cheap TV at a home show from a gang of criminals, I meant home remodelers. Also I have been on the no call list for my state since the start.

I don't have to pay anything in TN, plus I don't have to tell every company that calls me to do it, or keep track of who I've told to take me off their lists to be able to complain to have the law enforced. Everybody that telemarkets me that doesn't have a business relationship with me I could report if I want.

Now if they'd just come up with something similar to stop receiving junk mail....

Finally, their web site's been down all day...

I kept getting calls from AT&T, they wouldn't even tell me who the telemarketing company was or where they were calling from, AT&T wouldn't even tell me... Turned them into the PUC here in TX, & got a written apology from AT&T & off their call list finally.

I think Texas should be embarrassed by their deal. I believe may states that have these lists do not charge for it. It would be a deal if they charged the phone spammers for the service.

Florida has it, it is pretty good, and every once in a while a national telemarketer calls I start acting angry and tell him that we are on the list not to be called and that they could lose their license, I never hear from them again. This is definitely a hot deal.

Possibly a better way to do this:

Get an unpublished number (name not in phone book or available to electronic resellers) $1.30/month (BellSouth Tennessee). Your number is still available if someone calls directory assistance.

I receive NO unsolicited calls, except those using auto-dialers to every number in an exchange, or from those companies I already do business with.

For those that squeak through, here are the magic words: "Please add me to your do-not-call list." If they call back again, get their name, company name and phone number, and report them to the FCC. They're breaking federal law once you've asked to be added to this list.

For more info, head to the FCC site: FCC Telemarketing

You people are missing some of thew most interesting calls of your life . When those telemarketers call me I let the good times roll . The last one to call me was trying to sell me some windows and I got him all worked up and excited. Told him I have been needing a window: the wife grows flowers and wants everyone to see them in a nice bay window. Sure enough the telemarketer could sell me one but things went sour on when I told him I need it for my Chevy Blazer so that people traveling past us could see the flowers.
That S.O.B hung up on me while I was trying really hard to buy one of his windows.

Next time a telemarketer calls you dont hang up on them . It is your phone and you need to take over the conversation. If you are a guy and it is a lady telemarketer just ask her stuff like if she is pretty, how old is she , got any kids, can we meet, the whole time too you should tell her she has a lovely voice and that you think that you love her. When she gets very anxious to get off the phone with you then talk about her spill a little and this will let you go in to your routine again . Before she gets really pissed and hangs up on you ask her to call you back tomorrow.
This is so fun that I really look forward to telemarketing calls.. Actually I surprise myself with the conversations I strike up with them. It is absolutely amazing all the stupid things I talk to them about. I sometimes get them to talk bad about their husband or boyfriends and I even had a few women to tell me they love me. I have made a lot of women admit to me that want to be in a threesome before I would talk about their products.
Just try this one time before you have all those telemarketers banned from calling you.. Yes I have had them call me back the next day

My kids love this: When I get a call from a telemarketer, sometimes I tell them...

"You know I'm willing to talk to you, but I need to have some fun too. So I'm going to only talk in dog language. I'm going to bark once for yes and twice for no. Be sure to ask me all your questions so I can answer either yes or no".

Then I proceed to bark once or twice in answer to their questions until they give up.

Try it, it is fun!

I got one of these: Telezapper because everyone knows that I'm so fed up with Telemarketers. They ALL seem to have my phone number! Anyway, it's hard to tell whether it's just because it's holiday season or whether this is really working but I'm already beginning to get fewer telemarketing calls.

The telezapper hooks to your phone line; when you get a call from a predictive dialer (the device used by telemarketers to dial phone numbers -- you know when one has been used when you pick up the phone and there is a pause before the telemarketer comes on) the telezapper sends a tone that the phone company uses to indicate that your line has been disconnected. The predictive dialer immediately hangs up and removes your phone number from its database.

A bit pricy, and I wonder if I could just get a recording of that tone and put it in the beginning of my answering machine message, but hey, it was a Christmas gift and didn't cost me anything!
