I use the "My daughter is selling Girl Scout Cookies, I'll buy, if you'll buy". Gets about the same results.

Damnit! Illinois doesn't have this yet. Telemarketer's literally have me ignoring "unknown" calls on my caller id. As a matter of fact, I've gotten in the habit of slamming the phone down when I get an "unknown" because I hate to even hear the phone ring when odds are that it is a telemarketer on the other end of the line. I think it's a bunch of crap that these Aholes, should be able to hold you hostage like this..

Anyway.. Thanks for posting this. Too bad that it didn't work out for me.

Indiana has a no call list and it is free (they make the telemarketers pay for the lists). It just went into effect and I think there were over 800,000 initial applicants.

Indiana No Call List

but some d@mn union is suing because they use telemarketers for fund raising. Oh and they use Canadian telemarketers to do it.

Unions: be American, buy American or we hate you!!
Unions: if we can't use foreigners to raise money we will sue you!!

Love the unions.

Oh BTW I am a union member so I do know how they act.

I was actually looking for the NY do-not-call link earlier -- thanks, CodecX, for posting it. I've found registering there is a bit easier than what my dad tends to do.

Guy: "Hello sir...we're calling you on behalf of Sprint long distance..."
My dad: "Uhhh...ughhhhh..."
Guy: "Um...we're offering a special this month on..."
My dad: "Wha...wha...where is...where am I?"
Guy: "Sir?"
My dad: "Wha...what is this place?"
Guy: "Sir, we're Sprint long distance."
My dad: "But...but how..."
Guy: "Sir?"
My dad: "The blood...it's everywhere...*everywhere*..."
CLICK

Just goes to show: when dad's working nights, don't wake him up with an unsolicited phonecall.

It looks like PA doesn't have this list because they "decreased regulatory burden" to businesses at about the same time with energy deregulation...

If you hate getting telemarketing calls, you need to get Tom Mabe's - Revenge of the Telemarketers CD. You will be ROTFL!

Revenge on the Telemarketers [Audio CD

"Ever want to get even with all those telemarketers that have given you an unwelcome ring? Listening to this disc might provide a hilarious and vicarious sense of revenge. When professional phone peddlers make the mistake of giving Tom Mabe a call, he shows no mercy. One telemarketer asks to speak to the lady of the house and all Mabe has to do to get rid of her is say, "This is she." Mabe isn't afraid to push the envelope. The revenge artist unnerves one guy trying to sell carpet-cleaning services by asking him if he can remove a whole lot of blood and do it immediately. He manages to convince another telemarketer that she's been fired. And in what may be a case of going too far, he tells a dude trying to sell him a cemetery plot that he's feeling suicidal and goes on to concoct a very creepy scenario. There are plenty of good pranks here and Mabe is a master at turning the tables on people. --Fred Cisterna"

I love the telemarketers, after they listen to my problems they never call back. I make a fun screw off time when they call.

<< I hope you guys know that you can just ask the telemarketer to remove your name from their calling list, and if they don't they're violating federal law and can be fined a hefty fee. Yeah, it's a lot of trouble, but to me, that's better than paying $3 just to only block calls from your state. >>

how do u ask a recording to remove ur name from their list?

I actually look forward to the calls (although I must not receive as many as some of you seem to). Free entertainment! Amuse yourself at their expense; you've got the captive audience. Get a stopwatch and see how long you can keep a telemarketer on the phone. Try to beat your old record in each category: credit card, phone company, vinyl siding/windows, etc. Basically, try to be one of the jerky boys, except someone else does the calling to you. Ask the stupidest questions you can think of. "What are the dimensions of the credit card? I received one of them there new Master Visas and it doesn't fit in my wallet. Is it thin enough to go through the swiper machine at the grocery store?" Etc.
I once helped a girl at one of the phone companies get set up on Dialpad (or one of those sites) back when it was free for long distance. And, if you don't have the time, or just aren't in the mood, simply say no thanks, and hang up.
[edit] maybe this is why I don't receive that many phone calls.
[edit edit] answer the sat morning knock on the door, pushing the religion, house call in your underwear, offer to have them come in and have a beer while explaining. Quickly,"here's a brochure, have a nice day." They haven't been back either.

Hasn't worked the few times I've tried it. Whenever AT&T's (or was it MCI's? anyway...) telemarketers called I'd attempt to state "Add me to your do not..." and then I'd hear the click as they quickly hung up. Had to dig around and find their direct customer support number so that *I* could call *them* and demand to be put on their "do not call list".

Thankfully, I currently don't receive very many telemarketing calls -- perhaps 1 or 2 per week. Possibly because I moved a few months ago, and my phone number is not yet in the phone books. If only it'd stay like this forever...

I get a crap load of calls since we moved our business to a home based solution. Non stop crap. I looked at the fee for business and its like 100 bux for a year to get off their list....:|:|

On a side note, have you people started getting the kids that want to be adopted by your family for a week yet? These kids come knocking on my door and ask to be adopted. I havent actually listened long enuff to figure out why, but it is amazing what they have kids do now a days....

For those curious, California recently enacted one of these "No Call List" laws, they are compiling the list and hope to get the thing workin in 2003. Something to look forward to in the future, I guess.

For those that squeak through, here are the magic words: "Please add me to your do-not-call list." If they call back again, get their name, company name and phone number, and report them to the FCC. They're breaking federal law once you've asked to be added to this list.

Go to Privacy.net for a lot of info re telemarketers.

Fortunately I just don't get telemarketing calls. Don't know why.
I feel ostracised and am glad of it.

Hint too for those sites that want an email address and you don't want
to give them one just use me@privacy.net. It satisfies the computer request but I don't receive any of their junk mail. I get enough of it though. Just try sending email to this address and see the response that you get.

<< I got one of these: Telezapper because everyone knows that I'm so fed up with Telemarketers. They ALL seem to have my phone number! Anyway, it's hard to tell whether it's just because it's holiday season or whether this is really working but I'm already beginning to get fewer telemarketing calls.

The telezapper hooks to your phone line; when you get a call from a predictive dialer (the device used by telemarketers to dial phone numbers -- you know when one has been used when you pick up the phone and there is a pause before the telemarketer comes on) the telezapper sends a tone that the phone company uses to indicate that your line has been disconnected. The predictive dialer immediately hangs up and removes your phone number from its database.

A bit pricy, and I wonder if I could just get a recording of that tone and put it in the beginning of my answering machine message, but hey, it was a Christmas gift and didn't cost me anything!
>>

I wonder if the "tone" they're talking about is the 3 beeps you hear before the "The number you have dialed is no longer in service" message? It would be interesting to record those at the beginning of an answering machine message once and see if that works at all.

I found this little treasure out at "Senior Living":

STOPPING PHONE CALLS

STOPPING PHONE CALLS
Even if your state has not enacted special rules for telemarketers, you can get your name removed from their lists without waiting for them to call you.

If you do not want to receive calls from telemarketers, send a letter with your name, address, and telephone number to:

Telephone Preference Service
Direct Marketing Association
P. O. Box 9014
Farmingdale, NY 11735-9014

This list is updated quarterly and your name will be kept for five years. While not all telemarketing companies use this list, it is made available to those that do.

I figure it's worth a shot for free?

Uh, QWEST had nothing to do with this, it was essential.com that offered to do this and it was for free.

I forgot to tell everyone another fun thing to do with the telemarketers.. When the telemarketer calls me I will ask to speak to their boss and tell them lies on the telemarketer, like they are Gay and have been calling me a lot to getme to go out on a date.
Once I was talking to a male telemarketer and I asked to speak to his boss , His boss comes on and it was a female. I then told her that this male telemarketer of hers wants to make love to her and he said she is beautiful.

And why is Washington conspicuously missing from the 'State Do Not Call List'? I'm not surprised.
