I wish these units didn't have a monthly subscription. Are there any out there that do not require a subscription?

I was going to say this deal wasn't that hot because of the subscription fees, but I went and checked eBay, and dayum!
My 20-hour ReplayTV (the Panasonic version) which I got for around $200 IIRC on a hot deal a couple of years ago, is selling on eBay for over $300! Must be because they're easily hackable and come with the lifetime subscription included.

Anyhoo, ReplayTV is GREAT. These new boxes have some nice new functionality that I wish I had (such as component video outputs and networking capabilities). The subscription fees are a bummer, but they're the same as TiVo's.

Overall $440's not bad considering the cost of buying and hacking an older unit.

Buy a 3000 series unit of eBay. Those do not have any monthly subscriptions. It's missing some of the network features that the 4000 series have, but I'll trade that off for no monthly fees I just replaced the 30GB (30 hour) HD with a 100GB Maxtor. Now I'm really feeling the Replay love

i have an original Panasonic 20hr as well. paid $320 - $100 rebate = $220 for it some time ago, and it has served me well ever since. upgraded the disk to 80gig 5400rpm too.

wish i had component video out but my cable tv quality is crappy enough that it wouldn't matter. the networking features of the 4k series is nice though! wish i could add that to my replay somehow, like the tivo folks have the ethernet add-on even on the oldest units...

but this is a good deal! i believe there are efforts to eliminate the $250 fee by using linux and some hacking of the replay 4k unit itself. i may have to seriously look into this now...

How hard is it to upgrade the HD in these? I did it to my tivo with no problem, but haven't looked into these at all (used to be too expensive).

i really can't recomend ANYONE get a replaytv personally..... once you've seen the true exact digital stream recordings that a directivo makes and at roughly an hour per gig at what is not just "best" quality but original transmision quality..... it cant be beat...

basically add 2 120gig 100 dollar maxtors to a directivo and you get around 235 hours of pure original quality tv

unless yer in a condo or something that wont let you put up a dish..... i cant see any reason to stick with recording crap*y cable or off air for posterity or even time shifting......

Just that it is a legit offer, seems like lot of threads around here get changed or locked because they list false info or deals that aren't as good as they seem, especially with rebates.

I've gone ahead and ordered this, and the tracking info says I'll receive on the 18th. I'll report back if it's all good then.

Wasn't there two series...40xx and 45xx? I thought the 45xx and on required subscription service, while anything below, didn't require service. Since this is a 45xx unit, is it possible to downgrade to the 40xx software?

Probably something answered in the Replay TV forum...

The 50xx models are already out. Comes with a few new nifty features...

I have to say that the ReplayTV devices are awesome. Much better than DirecTivo or anything like that. With the ethernet connection, you can send shows to other people, and even stream video to and from your computer over ethernet! You can even offload your tv shows onto your computer to burn onto VCD

BTW, did I mention Commercial Advance? Skips all commercials. Only Replay has it.

There's a HUGE hacking community building quality apps to interface with ReplayTV. I definitely say this is a HOT deal... would get one if I didn't just buy the 5080

I have a TiVo now and love it, but I want a good recorder that I can make SVCDs from. The Replay looks to be the best thing out there for that. I'd never trade my TiVo for a Replay, but they each have their advantages and both are far better than a VCR. Too bad Amazon doesn't PM, I have some leftover gift cards there I'd like to use on one of these.

Man you must do nothing but watch TV all day if you need 235 hours of recording time on the TV unit...

I second that.

I used to have basic cable and with replaytv I programmed it to record all my favorite shows and I already didnt have time to watch them all(and thats basically from local channels only).

235 hours of TV.... I hope you get paid to watch it...

Anyone see any reason you couldn't buy this at CircuitCity this week for $299 (before $100 mail-in rebates) then AMEX pricematch to this site? Looks like it would fly to me, since CC specifically excludes internet/mail-order outfits from its pricematching policy, which paves the ways for an AMEX PM...if it works, your net would be 299-60(pricematch)-100 (CC rebates) = 139. I may give it a shot!

have you compared directivo to replaytv's progressive video out?

nice deal. replay 45xx is the same as replay 4xxx, only difference was the modem (which has since been activated on the 4xxx, it was there but wasn't used) and the subscription-based service, which cannot be changed now, due to individual serial numbers transmitted from the replay.

I didn't think there was a monthly subscription for the Replay TV models

IE: making this very hot, considering a lifetime sub from Tivo (which I own but is currently useless due to my dead tivo) is $250

for this one, yes, there is a monthly or lifetime subscription required.

No, they've gone to the same subscription fees as TiVo. I believe this change occurred when they were acquired by SonicBlue and released the 4xxx line of ReplayTVs.

ohhh ok. I hadn't followed them in a while. Wondered how they could stay in business with no monthly fee

While the progressive output is nice, it still cant match the 0 loss of a DirecTivo, atleast in my experience. There will always be degraded picture in a unit that has to convert it from its original format for storage, and while progressive scan can improve it, it cant correct it.
