One is a downgrade, even overclocked. Two is a pretty big upgrade, assuming you'd be overclocking. On the order of 50% faster, but be forewarned - there are reports of 7900 series crossfire exhibiting a lot of microstutter/latency. I'd wait until that is resolved.

Is it just the 7900s getting the issues, or do the 6000 series have it to? because I have not had trouble with these, so if they are same, I probably wouldn't mind

Also, do either of these come with a Mini DP to DP adapter? Ooo just looked, they both do

May go ahead and jump on these soon hopefully.

Take a look at this thread, if you haven't seen it already: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2303468

I don't have personal experience with it, but reviewers using 7900 crossfire have noted that the stutter is noticeable.

Was the microstutter in the 6XXX series similar though? My impression is microstutter has always been an issue, but it wasn't until the current cards where now everyone is concerned about it?

I'd be intersted to see how microstutter in current cards compares to microstutter on the last generation of cards. I think it might be a valid point that it's interesting how microstutter didn't get as much attention as before, but it might be due to people not caring about it before, and it would be a false conclusion to think that was because it didn't exist before. It existed before, but not as many people cared as much. Somewhat interesting social aspect to consider why the average concerns have changed regarding microstutter among average gamers?

I've been looking at ordering the 7870 for roughly $180 after rebates. How's the difference in performance?

Pretty big since this is the Boost edition and the difference between both has stretched out now that games have started to use the additional compute units and memory bandwidth. If you have the money for the HD 7950, go for that. I had an HD 7870 and paid the difference for the 7950 and haven't looked back since.

Hi guys; worth it to upgrade from a GTX570? My 570 runs most things fine at 1080p except the usual suspects: BF3, Witcher 2, Crysis 2/3. But it runs pretty hot. I assume this would be a fair bit faster and run cooler?

About 28% faster at your resolution. You'll benefit from having 3GB of VRAM too.

Well, it wont' run cooler, but it will consume less power. As for performance, it will be significantly faster, particularly if you pick up a Boost edition or get the older ones and overclock to 950MHz which it will be able to do on stock voltage.

This is how an HD 7950 Boost performs at stock:

If you won't be overclocking or are gonna be overclocking moderately this Sapphire is a great deal, but if you're gonna overclock to the moon, the HIS IceQ x2 is the best out of the crop:

TechPowerUp got 1210MHz on stock voltage (1.25V), though you aren't guaranteed to get that.

Thanks for the tips! Still not sure how extravagant I want to get as I prep for my next build; still have lots of research to do. But I do prefer to have some extra OC'ing headroom. In any case, thanks!

100/72: 38.8%. The HD 7950 Boost would be ~40% faster than a GTX 570. Obviously, with overclocking the advantage would go to the 7950 as it has more headroom and scales better.
