I have the 3TB version for about a year and it has served me well. It seems pretty common these days that you find external drives cheaper than internal ones.

Came up as $119.99 for me! I had just bought 2 at Newegg last week for $139.99 each lol. Guess another two couldn't hurt.

Just petitioned Newegg to credit me the $40 difference since the drives are backed by their Iron Egg Guarantee. I've had them credit me quite a few times this last week lol.

I really don't need this quite yet. What do you guys feel about the price trending of platter drives in the next 6-12 months?

When I clicked on the link it was listed at $119.99.... so I ordered one. Now it's back up to $153 or so.

Thanks OP, got a good deal on this drive!

I like how the 2TB version is $79.99 and the 1TB version is $80.38 right now.

The $119 price because Amazon price matched best buy around 7am EST. The funny thing is this very same drive was supposed to go on a lightning deal, and the lightning price was $129, higher than what it was just an hour ago!

I saw the deal, but as tempting as it was I had to pass because I'm all stocked up on 4TB drives already. Those who got in on $119 deal with Chase card really made out because chase has 5% cashback on amazon this quarter, so the total after cashback was only $114!

Staples has it for $129.99 and there's a $10 off coupon code (25147) available.

Man, this is almost too good to pass up. But I'm still worried about the risk and reliability factor. If you have got 4 terabytes of important data on it and the drive goes bad, you're screwed. I have backups on 500 DVDs all perfectly indexed in Word with a printed copy. But it is still a pain in the neck. However, If one DVD does bad, that is only a small portion. However data on a DVD is pretty reliable and I have never had any go bad on me yet.

I think I would need to get two of those drives to feel more secure. I'd put a copy of everything on each of them so in case one breaks down the other still has it.

I think you are correct. And that's what I'm doing.

Dvd media degrades over time unfortunately. They are however releasing soon a new type of (expensive) disc media they (and the government) guarantee won't ever degrade. It however makes SSD pricing look cheap.

I am of the same mind as you though. I buy two copies of every drive I store data on and use the second as a backup. I also use Bitcasa(before their new outrageous price increase so I'm grandfathered in) to have unlimited online/offsite backup of my data as soon as it's created so I don't even have to think about it. I prefer double redundancy just in case as you don't always make copies as soon as you should and unless you're storing the second hard drive off-site(which makes the backing up process kind of a hassle) something could always happen to take out both sets. It's expensive to be sure but losing 4tb's of data isn't something I'm wanting to experience.

Without doing some sort of RAID setup; what is the best way to run two identically sized drives in a system simultaneously and make sure that what ever is copied/stored to one drive is duplicated on the other? Immediately, or periodically. Whichever.

How do you check the reliability/S.M.A.R.T status of external HDD? The UPS guy just threw the one I bought over a fence into the back yard and I don't know if there is any damage. I usually hear a slight click when I access the drive but I think that's just the drive spinning up since I don't hear it again while in use.

Picked one up from Best Buy today. They had it marked with a sale tag for $119.99 but it rang up as $129 at the register. They honored the $119.99 price.

Has anyone opened up a drive that came in the new box that says "30% faster"? Is it the 7200 RPM or the 5900 RPM version?
