The radioactive orange color Fram filters are junk.
If someone offered me money to use it on my car, I'd decline.

This IS a good deal though, for those who like Fram!

Another quality oil filter is the AC Ultraguard Gold which is made by Champion Labs as is the Mobil 1 filter. Both of these filter down to 10 microns, but they cost about $10 each. Standard $3 ones will filter down to about 40 microns. Thanks you. DEE

I have a Ford Escape and on one of the forums the quality of Fram was being discussed. The main issue was the quality -- in terms of paint inside filter and other trash. I started looking at Fram filters and sure enough the filters had some trashy particles and paint inside fairly often. You do not really notice it until you pick up another filter and compare....

I no longer use Fram. The trash and quality did not look good, even compared to the cheapo Wal-mart Supertech brand.

Very fine filtration is not necessarily good. The reason being that the filter tends to plug more rapidly, causing a large pressure differential across it. This is hard on the oil pump, and will drop oil pressure.

The other school of thought is to use a regular cheapo oil filter, but replace more often - thus preventing the pressure drop problem. Other tricks include strapping magnets on the filter to trap fine iron particles that are circulating in the oil system.

Also, never mix oil brands in the same crankcase. Each brand of oil will produce a certain PH level over time. This is due to the trapping of combustion gas in the crankcase, and mixing with moisture (i.e. acidification).

Change oil and filter every 3000 miles or 3 Months (or less). Use a non-paraffin based oil in the northern states (i.e. stay away from Pennzoil and Quaker state et. al.).

Use the highest viscosity oil range based on the temperatures you'll be seeing. Running 5W-30 in the summer may not be advisable in hot weather. Car makers need to specify the lowest viscosity oil possible to maximize CAFE results reported to the government. Not necessarily concerned with the longevity of the engine (i.e. extreme longevity >100K miles). This is a topic unto itself. As for Fram, I see no problem with this filter - it is much more important to change often, pay attention to oil level between changes, and choose the proper oil type and viscosity for the driving temperature and habits you have! Cheers.

My wal-mart also had decent looking spark plug wires on clearance for a dollar. Not bad if you need them.

Fram's quality has gone down a lot.
The best filters are those that are made by Champion.
Some Champion filters are...

STP get these at AutoZone
SuperTech get these at WalMart

Just look at the bottom of the filter and look at the markings and you can tell a Champion filter from the rest. I use the two I listed above on all my cars.

And yes I am a mechanic.

and don't get snookered into using slick-50 or other PTFE additive. These never work, and can end up damaging your engine.

Good deal. People forget to mention it's the engine manufacturer who determines the life of the engine

Curious, since I have been a long time Fram user. Anyone have opinions of Hastings filters? When I asked around, that was the name I got from the people I talked to. Anyone have experience or a link singing the praises or unpraises of Hastings?

It was down when I went to check on it, but you might want to have a look at this oil filter comparison. I used Fram filters for many years, but switched to ACDelco after reading that article (if it was good enough to get installed at the factory, it's good enough for continued maintenance).

what manfactures use doesn't mean its the best... its the law of economics.. what ever is cheapest and will work good enough for the first few thousdand miles before the need or a replacement will be used..

Used to use fram then I switched to K&N when I started using mobil 1 synthetic. Cost me $35 each oil change. Ten dollars for the filter and ~$25 for 6 quarts of mobil 1 10w30. But for those of you that use fram, that's a good deal.

I generally try to head to the dealer for a Toyota filter. I believe it's made OEM by WIX. However, they close early and a substitute for me is a Purolator Pure One. Both are very good filters, and I've been using them as long as I've been using Mobil 1 (ie, the life of the car, 150,000 miles) on a completely original 7M-GTE engine.. not exactly Toyota's most reliable creation.

However, K&N and Mobil 1 filters are also a great choice given that you can find 'em. K&N's also have a nut welded onto the bottom to make removal that much easier.

After the reading I've done, my choice in filters appears from top to bottom:

Toyota/WIX, Purolator Pure One, Mobil 1, K&N (mainly so far down because I can't find them consistently), Champion, Roll of toilet paper, Tissues stuffed into an old soup can, FRAM.
