Still waiting for mine to arrive from Utah to Cali .. hehe

I was also wondering if you could use a cable with the wireless setup.
The main PC is next to the cable modem and does not have a wireless card, the notebook has a wireless card, can I hook up the main PC using a cable, and still use the notebook wirelessly !?
Or is it one or the other only ?

This deal is for a combination WIRELESS and WIRED router (w/ print server). You can connect a respectable number of WIRLESS PC's. Furthermore, it has 4 built in LAN PORTS for connecting up to 4 PC's via WIRE (i.e. ethernet cable). And finally, since it features a PRINT SERVER (parallel port), if you connect a printer to it, all networked PC's can easily print to that printer.

So as part of my wacked out attempt to buy this on the preview office depot site I threw a 0.37 pack of paper clips into the order. I just got the paper clips today (orders were shipped separately) and here was my invoice:

Merchandise Total $0.37
Sales Tax $1.23-
------------------------- ---------
Order Total $0.86-

Somehow I made 86 cents
I honestly have no idea what's going on or whether I'll actually get my router, but if I don't at least I made some money! They probably charged sales tax from the zip code that had the router in stock but then removed it when it was shipped to a different state. That site's definitely in beta mode

I assume from all the activity on this thread...this is a good deal for a good router?

I tested this router against a netgear router for wired connections only. I found it to be 30-100% slower. I tested it by trying a number of sites (measuring download time) on each one then switched the router out and tried the other. Did this a couple of times to even out internet irregularities.

Dont get me wrong I am not promoting the netgear router (MR314 or MR814) because the MR314 does not have as many features and the MR814 has a bug that does not allow you to get to some sites.

Just thought I would let you know. Am going to try the linksys next.

anmach, all those tests were with wires correct? So you're saying that the wired ports on this router are slower than the wired ports on the NetGear router? Or was one of the routers you compared using the wireless connection?

I can understand if the wired port is faster than the wireless connection but that would suck if this router is slower even when wired.

Was WEP enabled? WEP slows things down.

Both tests were with wired connections and not wireless. I was just testing the router ability. And, when I talk about times I round to the 1/4 of a second. Some pages were taking a good 3 seconds (www.people.com) longer to load. Where some sites come up real fast there seems to be a delay with the siemens router - like an old car when you stomp on the gas (pause and then go).

THANK YOU!

That was the first thing I noticed when I pluged it in .. versus my Linksys .. I have not used the wireless feature yet ...
I did not plug the old one back and time each site ... but I could tell from the speed of the sites I usually go to, with linksys there is barely any delays on the fast sites .. with this one there is a second or 2 extra.
ohh well ..! I even got the wireless USB NIC today from another posts here !
We'll see how that goes tonight !!

Haha! I discovered the exact opposite. Websites are faster and snappier with this router than with my old SMC Barricade 7004ABR (with old firmware)!

semi-OT question:

i placed an order for this online for in store pickup. 1st time it told me they had none in stock so it was placed on backorder. when i checked yesterday and again today it was listed as "waiting backorder release" in a city about an hour away... then i noticed that the website said it was in stock at my OD location, so i cancelled the backorder and ordered it again. the order page said allow 4 hours before pickup, but when i check the status online, it says "waiting to fill" and has the OD in the city an hour away listed as the shipping address but my OD as the pickup location. will my OD have it when i go to pick it up?

Got mine today, haven't tried the wireless, need to wait for a nice deal on some wireless nic's. Overall performance on the wired connection is fairly good, it does seem to be a little slower than my linksys befsr, haven't updated the firmware yet, might try it and see how that goes. For 30.00 to get a wireless router this is a pretty good deal. The setup was almost as brainless as linksys, why they chose the original IP on the LAN side to end in 254 I have no idea, that and I forgot to disable DHCP because DHCP is SUXOR. Kinda funny actually, sitting there wondering why I had no net access for about 3 minutes....DUH!

How are the wireless speeds so far?

Did you guys that tried updateing your firmware on the version 2 actually READ the page? It clearly states there is no update fr version 2 at this time.

"There are two versions of the SpeedStream 2624 wireless router. Only Version 1 has a firmware upgrade at this time."

Pretty funny stuff. Kind of like all of these senior members posting begging for coupon codes. Makes me wonder if their post numbers got so high just by not learning how to use freaking google adn common sense. Mine arrived today, I also used the Diggler method for complete satisfaction. Thanks for the deal. I really am interested to know other people's reports regarding the speed of this router versus others they use.

Just got and installed the $19 (incl. shipping) PC card wireless NIC from buy.com - D-Link, I think.
Came FedEx ground (3 days) and installed in flawless fashion.
But then, I'm nearly as old as Marconi, so I have no trouble with wireless.

Am I missing something? Can I enter the coupon code along with an online order? Or do I have to print the order and use the code at the store?

Thanks,

Justin

If you keep WEP disabeled, the speed is pretty good !!
Once you enable WEP with 128 bit encryption, it becomes very slow !! it takes forever for a page to load !!
I guess they did fix the WEP problem with the latest firmware upgrade .. but they totally messed up the speed...
The first time I enabled WEP, it did not work and I could not enter the router set up at all, I had to do a reset to factory settings, and configure it all over again !!
Not the greatest wireless router I would have to say !! now I have it plugged in to the cable again.

I purchasd 2 of the 2604's and tried one out on my system replacing a SMC, and it was slower, so that is why I picked up the DlinkD713 wirlesss with print server from Techdepot, I think it is a better product. I guess I will see when it arrives, it will run me 7 dollars more but I think it is worth it. My speed with the 2604 went down to 700 form 1300 with the SMC..

got the wireless setup no problem so far

didn't try WEP encryption yet, but i had to change the channel since the 2.4ghz phone is sitting pretty close to the router and anything above channel 4 cuts off the signal

I got the Siemens USB NIC ... do you think this why it is so slow !!
I have USB 2.0

Hmm maybe Ridefree will chime in or some others, my limited experience with wireless products makes me insert foot but I would think that PCI would be faster or take up less resources than USB.

Guys how is the performance with a PCI nic?
Anyone?
