I don't understand why you guys are having so much trouble.Once you enable WEP with 128 bit encryption, it becomes very slow !! it takes forever for a page to load !!
This system came right up and is fast - at least on my Toshiba laptop with the PC Card Wi-Fi.
You'll never load or transfer 10MB files in the twinkling of an eye as if it were going over a 100Mbps ethernet connection or a giganet.
However, it's at least as fast as a 10Mbps ethernet connector...even with WEP enabled. Think of it as 11Mbps capable, maybe down to 10Mbps with 128 bit WEP.
A web page should load within moments, not minutes - assuming DSL speeds as opposed to a theoretical 56K connection.
Also, think of USB 1.1 as good for about the same speed as the wireless 802.11b standard. USB adds a lot of processor overhead, not transmission speed overhead.
I followed the instructions for the SpeedStream SS2624 to the letter and had the switch and router portion up and running in minutes.
Then, I followed Oakenfold's link to the firmware upgrade page where I certified that my purchase already had the latest...and did not attempt to correct that which was not broken.
A day or so later, the $19 D-Link PCcard came in from buy.com (thanks again, awrong) and it was up and running without a hitch - fast performance, also.
With respect to the printer port, I probably will never use that as the USB connection to my printer works just fine (and I leave both the printer and the server on all the time).
See, there is light at the end of the tunnel! Unfortunately, some did not recognize it as the Tokyo Express
