#1. Would you post the url for the "DSLreports" where the SpeedStream firmware/wireless problems have been posted?
#2. This has worked out to such a good deal for me as I wanted to implement wireless starting Monday as my youngest daughter goes back to college and I wanted to enable her laptop. And the same day I ordered this, a medical client called and needs to secure and distribute a new DSL in his office. For this, there is probably no better than my old Linksys with ZAP & PCcillin enabled in firmware.

Hmm so both of us might be better off sticking with our old linksys routers? Befsr41 I'm guessing.
Only problem I ever had was when I got nailed by a nimda running XP's webserver on a box, course I had it set to DMZ for that paticular machine so it was asking for it anyhow...pretty cool actually, never seen anything like it before.

Evidently DSL reports search feature is not user friendly, or it is quite possible I am just undergoing a classic ID10T error.

Here's a very old thread I found in google, looks like it dealt with a similar issue, it's back from 9/27/02 so I"M CERTAIN that a newer firmware has been released...Google searchie Poo result

Unless of course ATI owns this company secretley, then we are just all screwed.

Woa, wait a second,

Support Page with firmware updates

There are apparently 2 version of this router, sorry if I missed this previously discussed, stone me to death or whatever.
Anyhow within the LAST 2 months there have been updates for EACH, make SURE you get these.
It looks like they claim to fix some of the 64 bit and 128 bit encryption problems, wow, took them a while huh?

Orderd online yesterday and picked it up local today. After a quick installation, It's been up and runnning for a couple of hours now. Very good deal. Thanks to all!

P.S. I hope it's half as dependable as my p120 with Smoothwall was (over 1 yr. with NO problems):Q

Woa, wait a second,...etc.
Great Zot! I was just on this very url the other day and these files did not appear.
They must have posted after I did the search...(yeh! That sounds like a good enough excuse)
(Although, honest, I was just there the other day and clicked and got a blank page.)

Oak, Great find! I'll bet it would have been months before I checked again. (Anandtech forums save my a$$ again!)

I used the router for 2 days. but only bad experience. My router is version 2. the one with uplink button.I haven't test the wireless part yet, but it already gave me headache...

1. the router comes with firmware v1.1 release 07, same as the latest one posted on their website. However, I tried to upgrade the firmware anyway and got an error "can't upgrade.. insufficient resouce..".. WTF

2. the router hangs for one or two minutes in a while. I just can't load any website. and judging from the status light on my DSL modem, I think the router is not passing my request to Internet. It does not drop the connection, but simply seems to be busy with something else (I can connect to the router's management page during the freeze, but the password windows does not pop until 10 seconds later. That is why I suspect the router is busy with something). After one or two minutes, the router are back to normal, and I can continue surfing. My dynamic IP address remains the same so I believe the router does not drop the connection.

I tried to play with a lot of options and did not see real improvement. I have a linksys and a netgear and none behaves in this way...

Anyone has similar experience? Maybe I'll return it.

Befsr41 I'm guessing
Oak,
Just a lucky guess on your part.

I think you may have something about implementing the SS2624 on top of the BEFSR...at least I think that has flitted across the radar screens.
(I mean using the BEFSR as the router and the Speedstream as a switch & implementing the wireless part.)

I haven't had the time to look into it yet, but how can your hardware have the firmware dated Jan. 13, 2003?
I also have the v.2 with the normal/crossover button on the back.

We'll have to look into your dilemma. It may take a few days. Meanwhile, are you implementing a firewall? and AV software?

I think it is wired too... The router reports: Firmware Version:Version 1.1 Release 07

So it should be the same firmware as the one posted on speedstream.com. I checked the package. It is factory-sealed. Does not look like a return. The office Depot sticker on the box said it was shipped out on 12/31/02.

No, I don't implement any firewall. The only applications I am running now are email, FTP, MSN and web browser. I do use Upnp for MSN messenger.

may,
did you see this KB article yet?

"
2600 Series - Troubleshooting Firmware Upgrades

Overview
Occasionally an error occurs during the update of the firmware of the SpeedStream 2602, 2614, or 2623 router. Use the method outlined below to resolve this issue.

Solution

1. Go into the TCP/IP configuration of your NIC card and change the IP Configuration setting from [Automatically Obtain IP Address] to [Use the Following IP]. Enter the following IP address: [192.168.254.1].

2. Change the subnet mask to [255.255.255.0].

3. Try browsing back into the router at the original IP of [192.168.254.254]. This should bring you to a screen entitled [Recovery of Microcode].

4. Repeat the original process of running the firmware update by browsing to the bootcode file and pressing [Enter]. "

That's all I've got for now.
PS My SS2624 also shows the firmware v1.1 release 07...go figure?
PS2 I noticed that this article didn't specifically state "2624", but it's at least a start.

Thanks. I think that is last resort when upgrade failed.(I tired just now anyway, and no screen for the "microcode") My attempt to update the firmware was not actually accepted by the router. The error message said: " error, data not saved. insufficient resource. please close internet connection and try again.." I tried to reset the router, power off and on, disconnect all other cables except the one to my PC, and close all other applications on my PC.. Still no go...

I'll wait and see other people's feedback.. maybe I got a defective one..

Has anyone that used The Diggler Method been able to track their order using the preview office depot site? It looked like I could do it with the order # and my phone # but it's not going through. For some reason my order confirmation email said that it would take a week to get here

LOL

anmach such things are readily found with google. Try searching for 'office depot coupons 25' using google, I'm sure you'll find a few sites.

I'm fairly sure that 16006100 is not his ICQ number

gotcha! thanks for the help. Figured it out. That "icq" number led me to some woman who wanted to whip me with a chain ... my only question was, "is it wireless"

Ha... "The Diggler Method"

Anyway, this info won't help you now (as you've already placed your order) but... I chose the option to create a new account after my order was submitted. When I log into the NEW/PREVIEW OD web-site using that NEW ACCOUNT, I'm able to check the status of my order -- "On the truck"

I purchased 3 of these, 2 are the standard issue, the 3rd has a button to turn LAN4 from normal to an Uplink port. The Status screen on this one reports:

Device Name: SCCB0BCA
Firmware Version: Version 1.1 Release 05

The device appears to work fine, although I am not utilizing the WAN port and it's firewalling properties.

Ooops, mine is a SS2604, no wireless, sorry!

Mine arrived Friday, but I didn't get a chance to install until last night. I replaced a BEFSR41, running pretty much stock. Changeover for wired routing took ~1 minute - unplug lan cables, plus into the 2624, plug in power, and I was browsing the web immediately. I just love it when stuff "just works"! I guess, though, that the only reason I'm celebrating, is that it happens so rarely...

I then changed password, enabled WEP, generated a key, put it into my wife's laptop (never having done this before) - perhaps 5 minutes. Very smooth install, and no problems since. Then again, I haven't set any advanced options, and haven't tried upgrading firmware...

Overall, I'm thrilled to add wireless for $37 (already had a wireless PC Card floating around). Great deal!

picked it up a couple of days ago, have had no problems with it, it's version 1 and comes with fw 1.1 release 0. I don't have anything yet to test it's wireless range though but it works like a charm routing to my 1-3 wired computers

Do you guys know of a good link to learn more about WEP and WiFi .. I have no idea what those are !
Still waiting for mine to arrive from Utah to Cali .. hehe

I was also wondering if you could use a cable with the wireless setup.
The main PC is next to the cable modem and does not have a wireless card, the notebook has a wireless card, can I hook up the main PC using a cable, and still use the notebook wirelessly !?
Or is it one or the other only ?
