From what I have seen, wireless nic's are pretty pricy.

$40 - $150 depending on brand, interface, and where you buy from.

[EDIT] Just noticed that Amazon also has a Netgear wireless PCI card for about $40 so not too bad... [/EDIT]

i'm pretty sure tha you need to buy the netgear pci adapter with a pcmcia card @ $116.94 in order for this to work.

Teekster's right. The PCI card is merely an adapter so you can use the wireless PCMCIA card in your box (another +$100). Heck, if the cards were $40 each with nothing else to buy I'd be all over this. However, since the router's useless without the cards, I have to pass.

this is really a hot item buy comparison to today's pricing. also you don't need the wireless cards to start out since this has a number of ports you can hardwire to. as a bonus it has the smc print server which makes it a better choice although it only supports win machines and unix lpr i.e. no mac yet.

also here is a thread for the linksys card for the cheaplinksys anandtech thread deal

i'd maybe stay clear of the smc pci adapter bundle since they put the 2632 wireless card in it but put a piece of tape or something that says if you remove the warranty is void. this sucks since linksys and i think 3com i.e. the competitors all figure you might want to use the pcmcia card in both a notebook and pc so there is no such stupid stipulation.

maybe it's time to go truly portable - also if you and your neighbors get along well this offers many possibilities for sharing broadband?

There is also a $20 MIR from SMC HERE which brings it down to $160.

I'm tempted to cancel the backordered SMC 4 port for $40 (link)and get this instead.

I love my SMC7004AWBR...
It has been a solid performer so far. To bad I bought mine before the rebate and all. I can recommend the Intel Pro Wireless PCMCIA card to combo with it. The first thing you need to do when you get the unit is upgrade the Firmware as I had problems with 1.92c I believe the new version is 1.92e or something like that. After the upgrade no problems whatsoever.

mpguy, I imagine you are talking about neighbors in an apartment building? Because I don't think the range is good enough to work in the suburbs.

I was told that the Linksys sucks for distance and it would constantly drop to the 2.2Mps range or drop out completely.

i think that the distance between homes is not that great a limitation since the wireless might not drop below the bandwidth of dsl or cable. you probably will see degraded lan speed, but this is not the problem or the intent of sharing this way. you should just strategically position the router near the closest wall with your neighbor. note this is only for those attempting to share for price savings.

any comments on that linksys card i mentioned earlier. looks like it can run in an ipaq with the compaq wl100 drivers. also it is only 54.98 shipped after coupon and rebate. this deal only goes till 6/9. please let me know what you think so i can cancel this from staples, but i can't bring myself to get the smc card for 85 bucks after rebate at outpost. i know the more expensive one is 128 bit wep.

thoughts?
