I would suggest you go and speak with someone at your college bookstore and find out if they have an educational rate software program. I've found all the local universities have software from the major companies for MUCH cheaper than other vendors sell educational software.

I just found out I can buy Macromedia Studio MX 2004 for $86.00!!
Office 2003 Standard for $56!!

No I am but I didnt know this.. just thought there might be others like myself that didnt know either. I've purchased from vendors like newegg - getting the educational rate thinking I've been getting a good deal. I couldnt believe these prices when I found them... I wish I'd have known a year or two ago...

Purdue University has a contract with Microsoft... you can get a number of titles for just $5 apiece.

Or at least you could a two years ago, when I was there.

I really like Academic Superstore for buying academic software online. Of course, you must have a current, valid school ID or papers to that effect, but their prices are very good.

Also good for buying software items if you're a teacher. Some software is also available for your kid's computers if they're in school. It's different for each software, you just have to browse and see what's available for which members of your family.

For instance, Office 2003 Student edition is available for your kids, K-12, while Office 2003 Professional Academic is only available for college students. Some of these items will work with future upgrades, others will not.

It's probably also worth mentioning the fact that if you're a CS major, many Universities have programs allowing you to either get free hard copies through the CS department or download the software through the educational MSDN program. For instance, I can download most any MS title for free (Legally ) as a CS major at my school. I only found out about this by accident looking through the CS department website, so it might be worth inquiring with your department's student services about this kind of thing too.

Same thing at the one I go to. VS.Net, Office, Windows XP, etc - all around 5 bucks each.

Univ of Washington also has MSDN Academic Alliance - you can download a lot of MS titles free if you are taking CSE courses.

That is how I get most of my software the rest comes from MS Action pak. FREE stuff from edu Msdn works for me.

for a while at my school, you could check out the school's "corporate edition" for xp, office, etc. for free from the media union. I always thought that was an odd policy. now they charge $8 I think.

I do believe that under the license agreement you have to remove the software from your system once you are no longer a student.

When my wife was in undergrad at CSU fullerton we got officeXP, winXP, studio.net, visio2002, win2000 adv server, SQL server, and some others for a total of about $40...all loadable on three computers each (no CPU restrictions on the server and SQL software).

No such luck at Carnegie-Mellon AFAIK...too bad.

NOT correct. Under the license agreement you aren't supposed to make any copies of the software media, but the license is good forever, and in some cases (as was XP Pro for me) you get a legitimate CD-KEY (yellow sticker) as well.

My school (community college) has some kind of great 'alliance' with Microsoft. I got Visio 2003 Pro last semester for free through that. One of my current teachers told our class we can also get Windows XP and other stuff; they're putting together a list...pretty nice deal. It's bad enough I had to pay over $300 just in books, free and discounted software definately helps make up for it.

Also, you might like to check out JourneyEd, a student discount software site. I've gotten some great deals from them...I just got Adobe Creative Suite (photoshop, illustrator, etc) for $399, all full versions. Check them out if your school doesn't carry the software you want.

Every college seems to have some sort of deal w/ microsoft. Hate to brag but my school is even better, Last year, when they introducing the Visual Studios, they had this event on my campus and they even gave out free stuff like xbox and office xp 2004 demos. But the best of all is that our CIS society can lend out microsoft product and you can bring it home to install it and use it like a normal retail copy.

i think you sign something when you gradute that has something to do with that. that you aren't going to install it somewhere else or something

why do you presume that people who go to college are kids? i have a class with a 60-70 yr old woman. and for computer majors, 40-50 yr old men.
