well what do you know.. i checked the online status just before and found that my order status was complete and I've got myself a tracking #. This is for the ProGear 1050 SE. I'll write up a review of it when it comes in. Good luck to those who are still waiting.

OK I just went through the same nightmare of ordering. I actually got far enough that my credit card company rejected the order (for $2800). I got on the phone and was putting in my "56 minutes average wait time," when I hit the back button a couple of times and the price said $599. (Mind you I had done a few times already.) Anyways, I got a confirmation number, but no tracking code yet.

Here's my real question. I've read from top to bottom of this post, but am still confused. Is there any difference in the HARDWARE between the Win98 an Linux versions? A priori, I would have thought not, but I can't figure what else would account for the $500 difference in the pre-clearance price. (I think it was $2,799 and $3,299.)

In short, the SE and the LE are the same except for one small but important difference. The Linux unit has an older BIOS. You need the newer bios if you want to play with most versions of windows (apparently ME will work though with the old BIOS).

There's been a lot of discussion on the Yahoo! group at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/progear/

Apparently you can't get a USB keyboard to work under the older Linux BIOS, but people are getting the BIOS updated from within Linux and then replacing the OS. Check it out. (or you could update the BIOS and still keep Linux.)

The BIOS update is in the FILES section of the Yahoo! group.

And yeah, it is on the slow side. But using Remote Desktop into my WinXP box makes it nice and fast.

Could anyone tell me where to get the newer bios for the LX besides the Yahoo site. Last time I signed up for a Yahoo account, for one day, it took me 5 months to get out and stop getting dozens of email messages a day.

Sign up to the Yahoo Groups and disable email in options, that way you can read and search the previously posted messages without receiving emails. This is what I do. The BIOS is available in the Files area of the group.

Yes, they seem to have the 1050HX, but it's $599.99 is for the 64MB version with the 3-cell battery. $689.99 for the 128MB version with the 6-cell battery. $12 for UPS shipping.
