Stay away from the WS or HW models. They have a flicker problem

so what do you recommend? i'm looking for a good BIG tv in the 60"+ range (after my old hitachi big screen recently kicked the bucket).

i was looking at this:

Sony 65" Widescreen Rear- Projection HDTV Monitor with 2- Tuner PIP and DVI Interface, Model: KP-65WS500:

http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=11183691&m=1&cat=24&scat=25

seems like a good price for a real beast- you got any other suggestions in the same price range?

If your going Sony try the WV series. The WV is a new chassis. The WS series recycles the problematic RA-6 chassis used in the HW series.
I know people who are steering clear of the WS series for this reason. There problem seems to be a quality control issue on this particular chassis. In no way am I knocking Sony here. It seems all the manufaturers of HDTV's are having their problems.

I would recommend going to http://hometheaterspot.com and look in all the different manufatucturers forums to look for features and pros/cons for the different. sets.

The Pioneer and Toshiba's are supposed to be real good. The HT Forums to talk HT: www.avsforums.com (the Spot is deadsville in comparison)

I just bought a Philips 55" 16x9 55PP9352 2 weeks ago. I love it! Great deal too. One, I highly recommend BestBuy for RPTV's....they have the best Extended Warranty by far. (never buy these for most things) RPTV's need calibration yearly or more. BB will come out and do it anytime as often as you want. The also are the only one to cover the Lamps! (Bulbs) These die every other year or so and are $$$ to replace. BB covers them.

Floor price was $2199. Did a PM to $2099. Applied my 10% off coupon to bring it to $1890. Added the $299 extended Warranty. Had them toss in the often free w/RPTV purchase Leather Recliner and Ottoman ($350?) and 24 Month no interest Financing. Also Philips has two Rebates through January. 1- Free Home Theater System...200W LX350 w/Progressive Scan DVD, 5.1 & DTS, 5 speakers + Sub. ($350 value) 2 - $80 after you buy 4 DVD's.

My Cable company should have the HD out in a couple weeks. Can't wait. And I expect the HT anytime. Loving my TV!

You might want to give the whole story on this... Sony issued a service bulletin on this stating an exact range of serial #'s by model that are affected by the "flickering" problem. I have a mate who has a model that falls outside of the particular serial # range and he has not had a single problem in 2 months. I'll see if I can dig up the sony service bulletin & post it.

EDIT

Here is the bulletin...

SYMPTOMS

1. Background brightness may have a subtle flickering in the picture
2. Picture has large shift of hue due to low output of one of the CRT'S (cannot be corrected by hue control in menu)

CAUSE

Flickering in picture caused by leakage current, and hue shift (low output of one CRT) is caused by IK range.

RESOLUTION

This symptom will only occur with serial numbers starting with 90, which have the possibility of this symptom occurring. If the customer complains of any of the symptoms above please do the following:

Change on A Board: IK limiter range increase. (White balance change symptom)
R508 To 2.2k chip resistor P/N 1-216-825-91

Change on the D Board Heater Voltage change (Picture flickers symptom at dark scene)
R8061 To 1.8 ohm metal oxide P/N 1-216-392-11

The reference value of Heater resistor on D mount for RA-5A is identical to RA-6 models, R8061.
RA-6 RA-5A Value
R507 R3229 3.3K > 2.2K
R508 R3230 1K > 2.2K

NOTE: If symptom of Flickering in picture is still present after the resistor change was implemented then all three CRT's should be replaced. White balance and G-2 should be re-adjusted.

Best deal going right now (IMO) is the Pioneer 64" widescreen for $2599 at Costco. Awesome set and an awesome price. Cheapest I can find this set on yahoo shopping is around 3 grand. This set has the same stretch modes and line doubler as the Pioneer Elites, which they are well know for. Definitely do yourself a favor and check it out. And another thing, be sure to check out the cable/satellite broadcast on the Sony if that's the one you want. The Sony's were horrible, but the Pioneer was just great. I guess it depends on what source you'll be watching.

You may have been looking at an older Sony set... all the new models have the stretch modes and line doublers (Sony calls this DRC). I can assure you that on my 57" WV series, standard cable broadcasts fill the entire screen and look faboluous (i.e. not grainy/pixelated). My buddies WS series also has similar picture quality.

BTW... that is a great deal on the Pioneer.
