5.1 means it has digital output for dolby digital 5.1 surrond sound. ie. you can hook it up to a 5.1 stereo receiver. I thought the 'old' Platinum had this tho. OR does the 'new' one have 5.1 decoding built in?

I think it has the decoder built in..but the main reason I am getting the Platinum is because the new 5.1 includes livedrive 2- w/optical in&out so I can output my mp3s to my MD. thanks for the deal.

You are right cyberwizard. The live 5.1 has a built in dolby digital decoder and it will output 6 discreet analog channels. Center, sub, front left, front right, rear left, rear right. It also has a digital out so it can output a dolby digital AC-3 signal or a Sony DTS signal if your DVD software player supports it.

The best reason, by far to get the Platinum 5.1, is the cool remote control.

If I were u, I would not get the platinum, I'd rather get x-gamer, i think it is more bang for the buck! basically platinum give you a somewhat uesless live drive and a bunch of useless softwares.

yeah i have the xgamer and it has the digital out, which i hook u to my dts2500 5.1 system, isnt this the same type of setup sans the live drive and remote??(which i might buy cause it just looks cool)

There really is not much difference between x-gamer and platinum except platinum has a live drive and all the game software that x-gamer has plus a bunch of useless sound-editing software that x-gamer don't have. The actual sound card is the same one, both are version 5.1.

so get x-gamer instead of platinum!

What's the live drive? Does the remote control the whole system? Thus, the X-Gamer doesn't come with the remote?

the drive bay provides optical outputs/inputs and has the infrared sensor thing for the remote. So, if you don't need those additional outputs nor the remote, save yourself 50 bucks and get one of the other incarnations.

Even if you get platinum version 5.1, you are not getting the best live drive, on creative website, they have live drive II which is better than the live drive that is included in the platinum version.

I know Wal-Mart had the MP3+ 5.1 for $79.99 but this is only because the software bundle sucked in comparison to the X-Gamer 5.1 . I may have to go do a price match plus 20% off
