I do not doubt that the cost in Best Buy's employee computer is 17.00,
But please be aware that in the music and video wholesale industry there are several thousand ways to get the cost down without showing it.
In most traditional retail businesses, the merchandise is bought at a fixed price and payment is expected 30 days after shipment. In music and video, the more copies you agree to buy up front, the longer the studio can give you to pay, plus they can offer advertising co-op funds for the chain( what you think lucas didn't grease the wheels a little bit to get yoda on almost every page of last week's ad?), give you large discounts on catalog(older) items, a big bunch of cash towards the annual home office xmas party, plus the usual assortment of free schwag for the buyers and higher-ups in the chain.

$17.00 is the cost in the computer, but that dvd of episode I right next to it probably came to 10.00 or less.

Its all accounting , the #'s add up in the end, but boy do they dance in the middle!

I've tried pricematching several things at BB before and they refuse because it is below their "cost." For instance, I was told that a PC videogame was more than $40 at "cost." That can't be true. I've never worked for any of these chains, but obviously BB's "cost" that an employee brings up on a computer is not the actual cost to the *chain*.

If TRUS and Walmart are selling this DVD for $10, then the cost is less than that.

Actually, I have a sheet directly from Midway, and the cost of each game is $39. games do cost $40 to buy from the supplier.

OK, I'm convinced. BB and these chains pay $17 for dvd's and $40 for PC games.

Just picked up two copies of the widescreen ATOC at Walmart (pricematched it with a TRU ad). For you Houston people, I did this at the Walmart near Meyerland. They said that they had a crapload of the widescreen versions in the back of the store.

NOTE: YOU MUST BRING THE TRU AD WITH YOU!

Well I went to TRU in the morning and arrived at the store 5 minutes after they opened. Got in line to pick up my copy and all they had was Full screen, they said that they ran out of the Wide Screen already. I said wow in 5 minutes?!?!? Tonight I took my ad to Wal-Mart, picked up a copy of the Wide Screen, took it to the registered and got it price matched.

It was 9.97 this evening (Tuesday) at the Walmart in Audobon, PA.

Each time it scanned at 14.97, but the system made a "bong" sound to alert the cashier to take off $5 due to a special sale. The lady said the price was up again tomorrow (Wednesday). No need for a Toysrus ad (though I had it with me).

I picked up four widescreen copies as gifts...

BTW - Target had them for $15.99 but wouldn't pricematch...

Retail stores pay quite a bit of money for DVDs. I'm pretty sure Walmart is losing money on this promotion. For instance, Best Buy is selling the Spider Man DVD for 16 bucks but they pay 17 for it. The trick is to lure the customer in with something cheap in which the customer buys many other things.

There is NO WAY Best Buy pays $17. If you are going to make up a number make one that makes sense. A year ago I was working as a manager for Target in illinois, our store bought DVDs for around $7-9. Best Buy ATLEAST triples the inventory of Target, so there is no way they pay retail for it.

Idiot. So you're just going to assume I made up the number? My best friend works at Best Buy and I don't believe he has any reason to lie. He specifically told me there were losing money on the DVD.

How would you like it if I said I never believed you worked as a manager at Target. BS I say.

They LIE to their employees about how much they pay for things. Ive got several other people I know that have worked there and the store BS'd them about how much things were, so the employee's wouldn't purchase so much stuff at their special "discount".

I am not sure about some of these other retail stores, but I doubt very much that Walmart is losing money on anything they sell. They didn't become the largest retail store in the world by losing money. My Uncle works at our local Wally World and they pay so little for some things it is rediculous. For example, they were selling these gumball candy things for like $.75 by the boat load. After a a couple of weeks they lowered the price to $.01 to get rid of them and still made money on the remaining stock.
I used to work for a fortune 500 office supply company, and when we had a product that we wanted to sell at Walmart, Walmart would pretty much tell us what they were going to pay for it and how much it would be priced at. If we didn't like it, then it Walmart didn't want our products. They are pretty cut-throat about prices, not mention that they buy such large quantities that the costs are lower. Not having your product in their store would be disasterous. Think of all the sales you would loss if Walmart decided not to carry your product? Don't think for a second that these places aren't making money on this. Volume, volume, volume. Even if they only made $.10 per DVD they are still raking in cash. Anyway, I am done ranting.

Hmm.. price matching sucks.. drive all the way to get a good deal and they don't give it to you. One of these days I'm gonna go in pricematch and let them do a buncha crap and then just walk out. I suppose they don't give a shiznit, but it makes me feel good..

On a side note, a friend of mine PM'ed ATOC at Blockbuster. He said some Blockbusters may pricematch the Toys R Us ad without confirming if TRU has it in stock or not, just as long as you have the ad, but it may depend on each individual Blockbuster.

Blockbuster has a new price matching policy for certain titles, if you bring in an AD that doesn't require you to purchase something else to get the special price they will price match it for you, but the AD is required. They are not required to call the competitor to find out if they have it in stock or not. As far as I know all Blockbuster stores nationwide (at least corporate owned/run stores) are required to pricematch if you bring the ad in.

Whoa I been under the radar all week, thought the $10 deal was just TRU on tuesday. Hope my WalMart still has this.

LaLaLand - the TRU deal was supposed to be 11/12 only. While the ad runs through 11/20, the AOTC was supposed to be only 11/12, as noted in the small print for AOTC specifically.

However, many TRUs (including the Sunnyvale, CA store) still have it in the system at $9.99, though they are stickered at $19.99, and are happily selling it at $9.99.

Many TRUs only got FullScreen reships, so are still out of WideScreen. However, I bought the FS, drove down the street to Blockbuster with the receipt, PMed to get the WS, and returned the FS to TRU a few minutes later. The guy at BB said he was supposed to only PM to an ad, but he took the reciept, since it was only a few minutes old.

Since many other stores know about their local TRUs still selling it at $9.99, maybe they are continuing the PMs.
