Those of you concerned over the batteries shouldn't be. As others have said, it comes with 4. I got mine in March and I'm still on the second battery. They are very common "air activated" hearing aid batteries--even if you pay top dollar for them, you're looking at about $1.50 each. I've found them lots of places for under 50 cents in quantity.

It's hard to find regional mumeric-only paging for much less than $6.95 a month anywhere--this deal gives you nationwide text service with 800 access and voice-mail for less than $5/month with the MasterCard deal. I'm buying another to activate when my first "free" year ends.

I'm pulling price-triggered stock quotes from MSN, local and national weather from Yahoo! Reuters headlines and baseball scores with mine--it's a great deal.

just picked one up, come playoff time, this is worth it for sports scores alone, also, this goes well with my cell phone, to give a toll free number to people who live out of town to call me and i can call them back on the celll

Man, I was tempted at $99 back when, but I resisted. Now, at nearly half the price, I couldn't help myself.

$56 later, I'm a bigger dork for it.

actually, i hav ea cell phone too, but i think this will compliment it well, and for only $56, it allows people who live far away to call me and let me call them back at my leisure w/ my free long distance

I have a mobile phone too but these two don't serve the exact same purpose. It's why people still have pagers AND phones. At least this keeps me from having the "nerd belt" syndrome (PDA, phone, pager, etc.).

Even though I'm keeping my order, someone over on F4T\/\/4LL3T mentioned something that raised my interest, namely:

"Only problem with the service is SkyTel is a wholly-owned subsidiary of WorldCom....whom is in bankruptcy at the moment. WorldCom's cellular division is transferring all customers over to AT&T. I wonder if the pager service will be available as advertised..."

I bought this watch a couple weeks ago and it was great at first. Within 12 hours of activating it I was getting maybe 5-10 spam emails a day from the same two places. Then I started getting only half my pages and emails, then nothing. I don't live in a good area for the service. For anyone who is in an area with good coverage I don't think you can find a better deal on a cool watch than this. Even when the free features expire the watch alone is great. I also activated it online and they never even took and credit card info. I am wondering if the 1-866 # will still be active after it is returned. Might get a year of free voice mail. For anyone with this watch, I'm curious if you also get tons of spam from naviantnetwork.net and niftyoffer.com I removed myself from both and still get it.

For $56, I get a watch that is always correct.

Then figure in the free number, pager, email service, etc. (not to mention the geek-factor) - I signed up!

How in the world did you end up with spam?
I haven't had the first bit of unwanted mail.
Now, if you gave the address up to someone........

As for the concern from someone about Skytel being owned by Worldcom: I received a "courtesy call" last week from Skytel to see how I liked the watch and if I had any questions. Of course I asked the Worldcom question. She replied that they have not been at all affected by the problems up top.

BigJimD: Read closely the fine print on the free service offer. If I remember right, you have to activate by December 31, 2002. I don't think you want to buy a second watch to activate next year....

I got this watch a while ago at WM for 90 and wondering if anyone else's 888 number can't be dialed from a pay phone? I can dial from any house no problem, but payphones don't work. other than that I love this watch, lots cheaper than a phone and you can alway use the excuse You didn't get the page if you don't wanna call someone back, which I also notice I get about 4-5 pages the rest get lost. but you can check them online and see your pages for the past 3 days, so thats a plus

sixt7gt350, that's good to know, re: Worldcome. I wasn't really "concerned" about it with this, but I wondered if there would be some bumps. If not, all the better!

A few years ago, the FCC allowed pay phone operators to charge the owners of toll-free numbers for calls made to those numbers. So if you dial an 800 number from a pay phone, the owner of the 800 number gets charged usually $0.35. Obviously those charges will add up very quickly (they are probably only paying a few cents per minute for a non-800 call). That's why a lot of toll-free operators will no longer accept calls from pay phones.

BigPotato: There is no "Free Overnight" shipping. The title is mistaken. There *is* free USPS First Class shipping, though, and it only took two days from order to delivery for me. Excellent.

Tokeniso: Nope, you can't use this as a 'generic pager'. It's Skytel-only.

That said, I just got mine enrolled and it's very nice! Skytel really has thier on-line act together.. you can do everything from their web page.. enroll 7/24, set up an email alias like "xxxx@skytel.com", review old messages you might have missed, that kind of thing. No credit card required, since the first year is free.

The watch sets itself. My last watch would drift pretty bad when it wasn't being worn on the wrist, so this is a welcomed feature here.

Page delivery is nice and fast, around 10 seconds for email.

The Pager access number is a 1-866 toll-free prefix. Cool, but I just wanted it for email.

Then you can go over to mobile.yahoo.com and get hooked up with daily stock quotes, news flashes, yahoo mail, whatever.

The watch comes with four zinc-air (hearing aid) batteries, the kind with the pull-tab that activates them.

Nice find TrouserTrout! Thanks!

I have this watch and I'm very happy with it. I do have a few comments about the batteries. The best deal I've found so far is 8 batteries for $6.00 at Radio Shack. They seem to last about 2 months. I've also noticed that not ALL Zinc-Air 675 batteries work. I could not get a Duracell to work for some reason. It looks like they are shaped ever so slightly different. The Energizer and Radio Shack batteries work perfectly.

Does the free service automatically expire after a year or do they bill you until you cancel?

Tokeniso: I may have been to quick to say no.

The Timex watch might be a standard Motorola (FLEX) pager. It's on 931.9375 MHz

I doubt you have another pager service on that frequency, since SkyTel is nationwide.

Perhaps with the right software or magic keypresses, you could change the frequency.

I'm pretty happy with the Skytel coverage so far. Nice watch!
