I was just flipping through my gold box and this came up. Seems like a good deal, any opinions on if its worth an upgrade from a series 1? Also, any ideas on about how much $$ I could get for a series 1 philips thats been upgraded to 82 hours?

TiVo Series 2 is physically smaller, and has a faster processor with a bigger hard drive (i.e., more recording capacity). It also includes a USB port intended for use with a USB network adapter (NIC). You can enable the LAN interface to download guide info over a broadband Internet connection instead of using dial-up. This is not yet officially supported by TiVo, but it does work today.

By the way, this is a great deal on TiVos if you can get it. I only got it once, about the same time this thread was started. I haven't seen anyone else offer any significant discounts.

I'd jump on this at this price, but it wasn't in my Gold Box.

I have an original TiVo that was one of this forum's best deals a couple of years ago. A 14-hour model for $300, with two simultaneous $100 rebates (= $100) and $100 off on a life-time service subscription. Then I pricematched the hardware to Wal-Mart and got another $50 back. Then I upgraded it with a 120 GB hard disk that I got on another AT hot deal. Now it's a 160+ hour TiVo.

I love my TiVo.

i love my tivo as well and dont know how I did it before. the other night my wife and I tried to watch tv realtime and gave up halfway through the commercials, er i mean show.

thx to anandtech last year got a 20hr for $90 from target clearance then upgraded to to 50hr which seems ot be plenty for me for now...considering the upgrade to v2 for broadband. Im still nervous my modem is gonna crap out one day soon...

Tivo has a 30 second advance feature to blast thru commercials. The sub is 12.95 monthly and 249.95 lifetime. I have 2 Directv Tivo's on order and will be giving my stand alone Sony to my parents when these come in. Great gadget...Even the wife can't live without it now.

I got my USB/Ethernet adapter from this
place. They also have instructions on how setup the dialing prefix. Don't forget to reboot your Tivo after connecting the ethernet to make it active. Of course I did not think of that and wasted a few hours.

At this time the old Tivos are more hackable then series2. I have succesfully setup an external 56k modem on my friend's Tivo with a fried modem. My modem is still good but I dont have phoneline so for now my Tivo is connected to the serial port on my win2k server box and it gets its data from the cable modem. Both of these solutions are much less expansive then having your tivo repaired or getting an ethernet adapter for series1 and you dont even have to open the Tivo box.

Yes, but the ethernet in series one will always be supported in newer software now, whereas you will have to open up and rechack your box for a serial connection everytime TiVo updates the software.

does anyone know what is the next model of tivo will be able to do say in 3-6 months. Just wondering cuz we have one now, and want to get another in the future. But it would be nice to have more bells and whistles.

Not so, serial support is built-in starting from version 3.0 just like ethernet and modem options. All I had to do is enter ,#211. For ethernet its ,#401 and for external modem its ,#319.

Never know for sure, but I wouldn't expect to see any significant hardware changes for at least another year or so. The stand-alone Series 2s (the ones Amazon was offering in their Gold Box) were only introduced this summer. TiVo is just now beginning to deliver the new DirecTV/TiVo Series 2 units.

That doesn't mean you won't see more bells and whistles before then, however. TiVo has delivered several software updates to older hardware. While some future updates may not be supported on Series 1 hardware, I would expect that all upgrades for the next couple of years will work with Series 2 hardware.

I am guessing a little, but I do expect to see some new third-party hardware with integral TiVo capabilities, e.g., combo cable-box/TiVo units, other DirecTV/TiVo units, etc. It looks like TiVo (the company) is agressively pursuing these kinds of licensing deals with third-party hardware.
