Damn these cheap notebooks with their integrated 'Intel eXtreme video'. Almost comprimising my ideals.

Why can't someone make a laptop based on nForce? I'd settle for that integrated video.

Yeah but the post office is making out on this deal.

That's a lot of money for rebates. I'd definetly make lot's of copies. I'm still waiting for some rebates of BB. That take a long time. I guess as long as you certify your mail and make sure you got all the copies. Sometimes it's almost not worth it since if one doesn't come back then your iether out 100 bucks or you got to call some 1800 number and be prepaired to spend up to an hour on the phone explaining your delema then they may ask you to fax everything in and who knows if you will still get it.

Awww, the rebate game. Good Luck to anyone that wants to spin the wheel...

On the other hand if you get all the rebates and the GC it's a sweet deal. Just hope that the post office delievers and nothing falls into the trash can. And be prepaired to at least wait 6 months for your check to get back.

I recently bought a Toshiba laptop from CompUSA, It had several rebates. I was worried it be a pain the ?&#@ to get them. Much to my suprise, they all showed within a month and a half of my purchase.

BB also has the next step up Toshiba model 1135-S155 for $850 AR thru 5/31. It's in this week's newspaper flyer. Double the RAM (512mb), 40gb hard drive. You must order online to get the $100 gift certificates. I ordered Sunday and mine still shows backordered. Customer service assures me that these deals will still qualify for rebates (the order date is what counts, not when my credi card is billed) even if they don't ship until beginning of next month.

I tried to get CompUSA to price match because they are offering a bundle of accessories free after rebate with any computer purchase: wireless card, wireless router, scanner, printer, software. They were selling the same model for $1100 with only a $50 rebate. They told me they couldn't knock that much off the notebook price but they would give me a $200 gift certificate instead that I could use the same day. Then I got up to the register and was told otherwise: gift certificate can't be used toward the accessories but must be used for future purchases. They couldn't believe I would walk out on the deal over that, but I'd been lied to the same way they do at automobile showrooms.

The real scam with these notebooks is the extended warranty policies. I was ready to purchase something in the $200 range for 2-3 years, but you can't get away with less than $300, that's almost half the price of a new notebook. Screen replacement through CompUSA is an add-on rather than a part of the basic warranty. Warranties from BB/CompUSA run concurrent with Toshiba's standard 1-year warranty so you can't just buy the 2nd and 3rd years. Toshiba offers an extended warranty but it's limited to 1 repair per year. I'm not buying any warranty at these prices and will take my chances.

I bought a Toshiba laptop from CC 16 months ago and it had two seperate $100 rebates. One from Toshiba and one from CC. Both came in the 6-8 week range. I'll agree that having $200-300 tied up in rebates will make you nervous until you receive them.
This is a nice deal, it's making me think twice about upgrading.

I'm picking this up- thanks for the info. The service plan at Best Buy is $200, is for 3 years, and covers battery replacement and even the LCD display (along with the HD, DVD, etc). Would you guys recomend it? I'm leaning towards it because it pretty much guarantees my laptop for 3 years (and I don't plan on upgrading until after that, anyway). Plus, the guy at the store said if the LCD needed to be fixed, they would just replace the entire system (he said its actually cheaper than fixing the screen). Please let me know what you think.

I just got the deal. I told my wife and she was about to buy me a laptop for father's day. She had planned to spend about $1500.

Thanks for saving me a ton of cash!

I have the BB extended warranty and was told the same things, I sent mine in a week ago for two bad pixels, they do not cover that and sent it back even though I sent a note for them to call if they werent going to fix it, a waste of my time, Also sent in for another problem, the fan makes a horrible crunching noise, came back, same problem. I can stop the fan and the noise goes away. I am going to see if I can get my money back since the laptop is only 1 month old

What is the difference between the SDRAM that this one uses and the memory this Compaq uses?

The toshiba uses SDRAM and the Compaq uses DDR. They are the same price btw.

word of warning. ALL celeron based toshiba laptops I have worked with have had bad cpu speeds. they all preformed like crap. a celeron 600 and 1100 gave up the same scores. Toshiba prolly keeps the cpu underclocked to makeup for sucky cooling (These laptops can change the speed of the cpu on the fly. HOW I do not know. Using cpuid, I was able to se that it dosnt do anything to change clock or bus speed, so go figure).

CC offer the same thing except it doesnt run concurrently with the limited manufacturer warranty. THey do give you power surge protection though. As for fixing it, as long as the cost is cheaper they will try their ass to fix it! Replacing the entire system is not an easy process, it will take your time a lot. That guy in the store is just trying to get the product out with ext. warranty.

Buy any warranty you see fit but make sure you read and reread the terms and condition of each warranty. I myself in the process of buying a laptop, most probably ALbook 12" by Apple, the ext. warranty is $340 which is too much for me so i'm taking my chance, will buy w/o ext. warranty.

Just so you know, if you have AMEX blue, they covers the product for 3 years .... what my friends told me, anyone care to elaborate on AMEX blue thing?
