i would not buy the floppy for $20. you can use your optical drive to boot and install OS if needed. so unless you have some special reason, don't spend the extra $20.

BTW, the 5% coupon code is expiring tonight.

Even if you spend that $20 extra on the Inspiron 8200, you don't get an internal floppy, right? I thought "Modular Floppy" or whatever they called it meant you get an external one you have to plug in.

If it is internal, I'll have to give the 8200 another look. I thought I had to go with the 2650 to get an internal floppy if I was going to use Dell.

the fd is internal and fits into a multifunction bay (the bay can fit battery, optical drive, or fd) the fd is not external.

the fd is necessary for bios upgrades though, so if your bios is old, you will need one to run from the fd.

That's good news, thanks for the clarification. I'll watch for the next Dell deal and have more options that time.

even if u don't have a floppy you can flash your bios. dell has bioses that flash through your HD... so save that $20, (it was $30 for me, and i should have known better than to pick it up )

I really should have bought one last week, but I'm now targetting the end of August as the deadline...I'll see what develops between now and then. Thanks.

Floppies have other uses though, some of us still need them.

oh, you can??? i talked to dell csr and they didn't mention that. they said i needed to purchase a fd just for this reason. my bios is A02 and the latest is A11....but things are fine for now. however, i do have a hardware boot up problem. i figure i'll send it in towards the end of the warranty just in case other problems arise.

Actually, it is not as hot as I think for some desktops.
For example, 10% is equal to or less than 5% off plus free cdrw for 4500.

If i buy a laptop, i plan to keep it and make it last for at least the next 4+ years(I still use my 433mhz celeron laptop by HP and am happy with it)...so is it worth getting the geforce 4 upgrade for an additional $139 or $79? Also, is this considered a real hot hot deal for a laptop or will there probably be better ones in the next 4-5 months(haven't been doing laptop research)?

Weren't the deals last week a little better? I'd rather have 5% plus $100 rebate than 10%. And some of the systems even had another $100 discount. Of course, with this deal you get a palm m105, if you have any use for that.

Dell has changed their 'configurator' for selecting laptop options and the new one sucks. You can no longer see the upgrade prices between processors or screen sizes/quality, in fact, you don't seem to even be able to select certain processors or screens with certain software bundles (i.e. you have to choose MS Office instead of MS Works if you want a processor faster than 1.6GHz.) This really sucks, I hope they change that soon or I won't buy from Dell for sure.

On the plus side, at least their tax/shipping calculator is working again.

Btw, shipping is not free anymore, but it is heavily discounted. My shipping charge came out to only about $6.
