So walmart has its own branded data service (similiar to straight talk for voice), but this one is called "internet on the go". There is a Novatel based mifi device and a USB device available for roughly 100-120 or so bucks.

The deal comes in through truconnect, which usually charges $4.99 / mo + 3.9c/mb, well the walmart deal has 3.9c/mb and no monthly fees and no expiration of balance on a pre-paid system (just got to use it once a year).

For an occasional user, the walmart 'internet on the go' system works great, i got the mifi + $45/1gb data refill + autorefill setup of $20/450mb (when balance goes to zero). The other pre-paid options are $10/100mb, $25/500mb

Since this is on the Spring 3G network, it should work in most major area's, for an occasional road warrior, it makes sense. YMMY.

The only downside (other than the normal high price of mobile internet) would be the 3G network. Tried a T-mobile 4G network card last year, and could stream Skype video, but only barely, and only if I had a strong signal. Otherwise, lots of artifacting, freezing, etc.

However, if you're not interested in doing that, this should satisfy anyone's e-mail/internet needs.

I have Sprint unlimited. My Evo 4G LTE is my hot spot. It acts as a router. 8 devices can connect. The 4G is awesome and even the 3G is pretty kick butt. 4G LTE is not in too many areas now but UNLIMITED date is HUGE!!!! Love it! I can Skype video, netflix, whatever no sweat...

Threadcrap comment removed. Wal-Mart will sell you a T-Mobile plan that gives you "unlimited" data (5GB of 4G, limited speed after that) for $30/mo.

You do not have unlimited data for your hotspot.

You have unlimited data on your phone
You have 5gb data when you use your phone as a hotspot/tether. Thus while your phone has unlimited data you can only "give" 5gbs of combined data to your laptops and tablets.

How about you read the fine print of your contract, which sprint sent you a few months ago saying they are changing how your hotspot works. (It was the month of June 2012) This was a nationwide change.

Here Let Me Google This For You, Since You Obviously Do Not Pay Attention to the Mail or the Text Message Sprint Sent You Telling You About There Change In Policy

Isn't it only if you use Tethering service from Sprint? What if he uses the third party app like FoxFi, or even rooted? I don't think Sprint took any action about the usage from those go-around (or illegal, if you want to say straightforward) apps, thus he is correct that he has unlimited data for tethering as well.

You said they have 5GB. This is also incorrect. I know the contract. I talked to them about their plan. When I got my Evo 4G LTE they wanted 2GB for 20$ a month. They also have 6GB. They do not have 5GB for my phone.

Personal squabble post unrelated to deal removed.

Personal squabble post by Roland00Address deleted.

1) Sprint killed the unlimited data for hotspots for existing users in June 2012. You still have unlimited data on your phone. These unlimited data that became 5gbs of data was for $29.99 and there is no way to achieve this price for new customers
2) Sprint in May of 2012 introduced new tethering plans for new contracts. These prices were 2gb for $19.99 and 6gb for $49.99
3) Yes you can use third party apps or custom roms to enable tethering on a phone that does not have a tethering plan. This goes against the Terms of Service.
4) Yes there is little consequences for breaking the Terms of Service you may lose service, you may be throttled, or Sprint may not like you to the point they will refuse to do business with you.[/QUOTE]

You should move on, dude.

it doesn't matter if you root your phone - I'm pretty sure the phone companies can still tell when data is being used via tethering, so you do need to be careful. I also have an "unlimited" plan (paid for by my company) and Jailbroke my 4S to get free tethering. It's the main reason a Jailbroke, but try not to use it too much to stay under the radar.

That sounds like the better plan.

Right, but... you're paying $30/mo. This plan has NO monthly fee, and only charges you when you use it. You pre-pay ~$150 and you can get 1GB of data. You are not tied into a plan. You can use it or not. If you find that you are using it a lot/frequently (say, 500MB more than once a month) then it would probably make sense for you to switch to a plan like the T-Mobile one. But if your usage is more like 200MB once every couple of months when you're road-tripping and don't want to waste time looking for WiFi hotspots, this will pull you through at a lesser overall cost.

Basically this product is for people who can anticipate needing to use less than 1GB over the course of 5 months, to put a rough number on it.

Is this Verizon 33$ a month and you get over 7GB a month?

this is actually a pretty good solution for someone like my dad, who only checks his email occasionally. the only other solutions are dialup or cable (which would run him $49 a month). probably 500mb would last him an entire year.
