Ok here is another flaming CompUSA deal for some. Please read the entire post before running off to CompUSA to be disappointed.

This is a hot deal on the retail boxed Western Digital 120GB7200 RPM EIDE kit. This deal is not available for everyone, but for those who already purchased this drive at a higher price with a price protection credit card or for those in the right regional area(s) it is hot, hot, hot!

As we all know by now from recent Western Digital hard drive deals posted here, Best Buy often issues temporary in-store price reductions when there is a competitor in their sales area that has same product advertised at a lower price. This week CompUSA has the WD 120GB 7200 RPM drive advertised @ 299.99 with a $100 MIR. Both of the Best Buy?s in my area have temporarily reduced their price on this drive to $199.97 with no rebate to counter CompUSA?s advertised price. You can PM the $199.97 price at CompUSA and still get the $100 MIR. You success with the PM will depend on your local B&M manager. Some managers will PM BB and some will not due to their $100 MIR so not everyone will have success, but for the lucky, they get one great deal on an awesome drive! I was able to PM two of the drives yesterday while I was purchasing 88 cent books. What a day at CompUSA!

I did not post this yesterday because I wanted to verify that the deal was legit and not a pricing error at Best Buy. I re-verified the price at Best Buy this morning after their nightly inventory update so the price reduction is valid. I also wanted to contact the Western Digital rebate center and verify that they would accept the rebate with the lower price. I called them this morning and was told price paid is not a factor when processing the rebate.

Here is the Best Buy info for their drive

Model ? WD1200BBRT
SKU# - 4334107
Price - $199.97

Here is the CompUSA information for their drive

Model ? WD1200BBRT
SKU# - 288322
Price - $299.99 - $100 MIR

WD 120GB HD on CompUSA website

$100 MIR on WD 120GB HD at CompUSA (requires Adobe Acrobat reader)

Note - fine print on $100 MIR states a gift card, but I called and verified that it is not a gift card but a $100 check as stated on the front of the rebate form.

Here are the requirements for this deal to work?

1. You must have a Best Buy B&M and a CompUSA B&M within the same sales area. I don?t know how Best Buy defines a sales area so you will just have to check. Sorry, this deal is NOT available online at bestbuy.com.

2. Your Best Buy must have adjusted their price on the drive to $199.97. For what I understand from previous deals with this type of reduction, this reduction is done at the regional corporate office. If anyone else know different then let me know and I will update the post.

3. The product must be in stock at your local Best Buy B&M.

You can either call your Best Buy B&M and verify their current pricing or stop by the B&M and get them to print a price verification receipt at the customer service counter. If the price is reduced then you know the rest.

I have the following supporting documentation that I can email someone who is willing to post for others

Best Buy B&M shelf tag showing $199.97 price with no rebates
Best Buy price verification receipt showing $199.97 price and date 12/3/2001
Best Buy receipt where I purchased one at $199.97 just in case CompUSA did not honor the PM. (returned this morning)

Please post and success and failures with this deal and good luck!

Are any of the rumors I've heard about Western Digital hard drives being unreliable true?

First off great research and good post.

Again for those with a PM credit card you can probably save yourselves the run-around and relax with the haggling at CrapUSA and just PM with the card if your local BB has the deal.

Forgive my naivety, but I just got my blue card and am new to athis PM stuff. Doesn't BestBuy have to ADVERTISE their price for you to take this route??? Thanks.

SWEET find!

Couple questions though....on the rebate form it mentions "Western Digital 120 GB 7200 RPM FireWire" ...firewire?

Also it lists the model as WDT1200BBRTL instead of WDT1200BBRT...same thing?

I called my local best buy and did verify the price drop (there's a compusa across the street).

Will I have any problems getting a rebate on two drives? Should I just send them to seperate addresses?

Thanks!!!

I need to read the posts better.. LOL

AMEX rules on PM'ing are that there cannot be any coupons or rebates used and still get the full price PM'd. (already tried on an 80gigger I bought a month ago) I'm not sure if they can track a rebate though, worth a try maybe.

Worked like a charm in Lawrenceville, NJ at the CompUSA on Route 1. There's a Best Buy in the same mall. They had no WD 120GB drives on the shelf, but I grabbed the ~$200 shelf tag and ran over to Comp. The cashier PMed it without even calling a manager. Nice! Thanks, GetReal, excellent post!

They told me at CompUSA that they will not pricematch if the price is lower than their wholesale cost, and that the cost was something like $257.00, so they couldn't do it.

Looks like the Atlanta Stores have the adjusted price!

And Sesopedalian... Go here... print out CompUSA policy and go back to the store. They have rules... and it doesn't say anywhere that there is a "Low" limit! Sounds to me like they just wanted to Bull* you!

I got another bs line at the local store: the price has to be advertised in order to pricematch it.

Thats why I will go in with their policy printed. I wasn't even planning on another drive after I got the one from Sams... but I will not be treaded like a little child. If they have it in stock I'll get it... or I be escorded of the premises.

We need to do something about this cra*. It seems like more and more stores promise one thing just to do another. Time to register a site with CompUSA_lies.com or something alike... what do you think?

Couldn't get the CrapUSA to pricematch, either, even though the BestBuy rep confirmed the $199.97 price (no stock, though).

Woo hoo! Picked up 2 drives today from the CompUSA in Culver City. They originally gave me a little crap about wanting an ad but finally they ended up calling. Best Buy had them in stock and they did it with no problems. Now I just have to figure out how I'm going to get the $100 rebate on both of them. Hmmmmm.....

240 GB of hard drive space. Talk about overcompensation.

Thanks again GetReal

Are we sure these are the same drives as the rebate states?

The rebate has an extra L at the end of the model #...

Has anyone confirmed whether the rebate is in the form of a check or a CompUSA gift card? In the fine print at the bottom of the rebate, it says: "If you have not received your gift card after 8 weeks, please call 888-292-0667." I know someone already mentioned this, but there are conflicting responses by different people who claim to have called and asked.

[edit]
Ok, I just waited on the phone for a half hour for someone there to help out and tell me if it's a gift card or a check. I ended up hanging up bc I have other things to do right now. That'd be great if you guys could post any responses you got from a CSR at the 888 number above regarding whether the rebate is a gift card or a check.

Thanks!
